Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGERT OSCAR MARTENS Gert Oscar Martens, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Manitoba died on August 23, 2016. He was born on May 28, 1934 in Hearst, Ontario near Reesor where his parents pioneered in the 1930s. He was predeceased by his infant son Ariel, his parents, Luise and Gerhard Martens and his sister-in-law Hilda Martens. He is survived by his wife Katherine, daughter Renee (and partner Glen Jones), son Rod (and partner Donna Park), daughter Jennifer (and partner Rummit Laul), and his grandchildren, Ben Martens, Samuel Jones, and Leah Martens. He is also survived by his brother Henry, sister Helga Enns (and partner Ed), sister Ingrid Penner (and partner Abe) and sister Hildegard Martens. Gert's enduring love of learning, teaching and travel sustained him through a long and successful life. He taught electrical engineering for 34 years at the University of Manitoba and was able to spend three sabbatical years in Germany. He was an enthusiastic hiker in the Rockies and, in later years, his love of nature and exercise took him to King's Park for daily walks regardless of the weather. Gert spent the last three months at the Palliative Care ward of St. Boniface Hospital where he very much appreciated his many visitors. We wish to thank the wonderful staff for their warm compassionate care of my father. A memorial for Gert will be held on Monday, August 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fort Garry Mennonite Fellowship Church, 150 Bayridge Ave., Winnipeg after a private burial. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Gert could be made to either St. Boniface Palliative Care ward or the Manitoba ALS Society.

Dr. Martens was my graduate supervisor in the 1970's. I always felt that he had a sincere relationship with his students and went that "extra mile" to help. I can unequivocally say that he helped structure my own successful career and no doubt that of many of his students. All my best to Kathy and the rest of the family in this time of sorrow. Dr. Martens loved life and I was fortunate to be his student in class ECE 3530 Network Theory (Formerly 024.353) at the University of Manitoba. He was very approachable and popular with all students. Bruce in Grand Rapids, MI, USA - Posted by: Bruce Paizen (Student) on: Aug 30, 2016

Kathy, We were very sad to hear of Gert's difficulties, and eventually his passing. He was well-liked by everyone. We can see that you have family connections that will help you cope; that's why we moved to the Vancouver area, to be close to our daughter Cathy. Best wishes. I was in the Grade 12 graduating class with Gert at MCI Gretna in 1953. He was a friendly and knowlegable person and enjoyed participating in activities. He was a member of my curling team at MCI. My condolences to Katherine and the Martens family members. Vern and Aggie Fast, Surrey, BC - Posted by: vern fast () on: Aug 27, 2016

I am sorry to hear of Gert's passing but know that he is in a better place now. I would like to have been able to attend the memorial service but will only arrive back from Germany on August 30. My deepest sympathy to Katherne and the family. John - Posted by: John N Janzen (MCI fellow graduate and friend) on: Aug 27, 2016
