OTTO KRAHN Otto Krahn was born on March 23, 1931 in Tillwalde, Rosenberg Prussia. His parents were Martha, nee Jaschke and Johann Krahn. He was the second youngest of seven children. Otto had a wonderful childhood but everything changed through horrors of the Second World War. The family was hit hard by the calamities of the war. Two brothers died in action. The family lost their beloved homeland when they had to flee. For four years Otto lived in a refugee camp in Denmark. After Denmark he spent a number of years in Southern Germany. These were times of hardship and uncertainty. In 1953, after a long time of waiting, Otto had the opportunity to immigrate to Canada. After arriving in Canada he worked on a farm in Ontario to pay off the expenses of his sponsorship to Canada (Reiseschuld). In 1956 Otto moved to Winnipeg where he worked different jobs until in 1963 he found employment as grounds manager at the Municipal Hospitals (Riverview Health Center). He worked there for 28 years until his retirement. While working there he got to know Tina Kasdorf, the assistant to the head cook. They married in 1973. In 1974 they joined the Springfield Mennonite Church. They participated in the life of the church over the years and had many wonderful experiences of worship and fellowship. Besides church life they also very much enjoyed their cottage at Hillside Beach. For 17 years they enjoyed the beautiful Manitoba summer at this place where the cultivated friendships and were re-energized. In 2008 Otto and Tina moved to Kingsford Haus, 426 Kingsford Avenue. In March 2010 Tina died. Otto missed her very much. Otto Krahn passed away on September 15, 2016 at Concordia Hospital. He is survived by his brother Hans (Anna Lena) Krahn and family, Germany; brother-in-law John (Anna) Kasdorf; and family, brother-in-law George (Lina) Kasdorf and family. Funeral service will be held on Monday, September 26 at 10:30 a.m. at Springfield Heights Mennonite Church, 570 Sharron Bay, Winnipeg, with viewing prior to the service. Interment to follow in Mennonite Memorial Gardens. Thank you to all those who supported Otto and provided care for him. Rest in peace, Otto.
