RUDOLF (RUDI) WALDEMAR PETERS April 13, 1947 - September 17, 2016 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Rudi Peters, on Saturday, September 17, 2016, at the age of 69 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Waldemar and Mary (Dyck); his brother Frank; and sister Edith (Kool). He is survived by his "family by blood": nephew Keith Peters (Karen) and family: Kalie, Kasia and Kyla; his brother-in-law Pieter Kool; and nieces, Elinor Hansen (Peter), Andrea Kool (Richard) and Catherine Stewart (Alistair) and their families, as well as many relatives and close friends. Rudi had a true humanitarian spirit and was concerned about those less fortunate than himself. He put his beliefs into action when he became a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his "family by love": foster sons, Jamie Pottinger and Miguel Flores; grandchildren, Chera-Lee Pottinger, Randy Pottinger and Ahmed Nur; and great-grandchildren, Zoe, Olivier and Sofia. Rudi was born, raised and educated in Winnipeg, and was a graduate of the University of Winnipeg. He worked for the Government of Manitoba in several departments, often as a counsellor, including Manitoba Housing and Renewal, Manitoba Agriculture, Selkirk Training Plant, Labour and Manpower, and Education and Training. Rudi was an active member of First Mennonite Church, serving on the Mission and Service Committee and teaching Sunday School. Rudi always said his students taught him much more than he taught them. He was generous with both time and money, making sacrifices to better the lives of others. Rudi was interested in current affairs and loved to debate government issues and other hot topics of the day. This led him to Toastmasters, where he honed his public speaking skills, entering contests and winning many awards. He held several positions, including District Governor of District 64. Rudi loved being with people and never missed a chance to be with his many circles of friends, especially his supper club group. A special thanks to the staff of GB3 at Health Sciences Centre for their compassionate care. A memorial service for Rudi will be held on Monday, October 3 at 11:00 a.m. at First Mennonite Church of Winnipeg (Alverstone and Notre Dame). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Winnipeg Harvest or to the First Mennonite Church Memorial Fund. Rudi, you have left a big hole in the lives of those who knew and loved you. We will miss you deeply.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I have fond memories of Rudi & the family corner store on Pacific Ave. & Eric St. We'd play in the sandbox, theirs or ours. I remember his Dad who had only 1 arm & swept the floor & made ice cream cones adeptly nonetheless. They were a beautiful, faith filled family & sometimes my older sister would help stock grocery shelves for an appreciated financial compensation. I am so sorry I missed the memorial service as another Toastmaster told me that it had already been held & today I thought that at least I'd read his obituary & here I missed the event by 1 day. To this day EVERY time I went past his church, I would think of the Peters & that that was their church. I am sure Rudi is resting in peace for God has recognized his kind loving heart and has welcomed him 'home'.!! - Posted by: Valerie Drewrys Wadephul (Childhood neighbour & reaquainted through Toastmasters) on: Oct 04, 2016

  • I knew Rudi as a Toastmaster. He was much loved and admired in the district for his willingness to help and mentor, his sometimes-mischievous sense of humour, and his spirit of community service and social justice. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. - Posted by: Ardythe Basham (Friend through Toastmasters) on: Oct 02, 2016

  • Rudi Peters was a great Grandfather friend and mentor to myself and to my kids. He had such a kind heart. He took in so many and asked for nothing, simply because he cared. He had so much compassion and love for all people that were lucky enough to be apart of his life, that he literally saved lives through his devotion and love for them. He will be truly missed! Such great person, We are all so sad that he is gone. We were truly blessed to be apart of it all. You might be gone, but will not be forgotten. Sending Lots of Love and condolences to his family in the sad time. Melanie Green (Delaine) - Posted by: Melanie Green (Extended Family) on: Sep 29, 2016

  • Rudi was a dear friend to our mother, Marg, and to our entire family. His compassion, selflessness and wonderful sense of humor helped us through some very difficult times. We are blessed to have known him - he will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. - Posted by: Terry Trainor (Friend from Calgary) on: Sep 24, 2016

  • Rudi always saw the best in others and brought out the best in others. A more kind, generous and selfless person you would be hard pressed to find. I had the great privilege to follow Rudi up the ranks in Toastmasters and have good memories of fun times travelling around the Region with him in the early 90s. His leadership and guidance to so many will no doubt be missed. - Posted by: Shelley Morris (Friend from Toastmasters) on: Sep 24, 2016

  • Rudi was a friend and my first mentor in Toastmasters. We first met in 1989 when he visited and provided assistance in our club creation. When he was district governor, I was his Sargent-At-Arms and provided his monicker Mr. Morality. Rudi was full of integrity, friendship and compassion. I learned many life lessons from you. RIP Rudi a life well lived taken too soon. - Posted by: Andrew Stambrook (Friend (toastmasters)) on: Sep 24, 2016
