April 20, 1924 - October 6, 2016
On Wednesday afternoon October 6, 2016 Stephania Romaniak passed away peacefully, at the age of 92 at Holy Family Home with
family and friends by her side.
Remaining to forever cherish her memory are her daughter Marta (Yurko);
grandchildren, Jurij, Larissa, and Roman; great-grandson Cooper; niece Marusia Werhun Masserey (Mike); her dear sister Olha Werhun; nephews, John (Jeanne), and Steve Werhun (Valerie), Roma Bellhouse
(Allan), Daria (Rostyslaw); and sister-in-law Irena Romaniak; as well as many nieces and nephews in Ukraina.
Stephania was predeceased by her beloved husband Jaroslav Romaniak; their son Jurij Romaniak Sr. (Rose); her sister Maria, and brothers Mychajlo, Stefan and Ivan.
Stephania was born in Truskavetz on April 20, 1924, the youngest of six children. She was an excellent student with a passion for learning, and became a top designer
seamstress. When Jaroslaw wed Stephania in 1944, their adventure had just begun. As the war was devastating their homeland, they were forced to flee on foot through eastern Europe and Austria, finally settling in a
displaced persons camp in Mittenwald
Germany. Although the times were harsh, they met and cherished what were to become many lifelong friends during these years, creating an extended family circle in Canada.
In Mittenwald their son Jurij was born in 1947. Seeking a better life, they immigrated to Canada in 1949 setting roots in Winnipeg. The early years were difficult but they worked hard and together they conquered all obstacles. They were blessed with another child Marta in 1956.
Stephania was a Patriotka, and a proud
citizen of Canada. She enjoyed embroidery alongside her husband's Riz'ba. Together, they created art and lived in its tapestry! They frequented the Ukrainian National
Festival in Dauphin, and Folklorama in
Winnipeg, showcasing their craft.
Stephania enjoyed volunteering and served at many Ukrainian organizations such as
Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM),
Ukrainian Canadian Congress (KYK), League of Ukrainian Canadian Women (LUCW) and Institute Prosvita. She sang with the Dumka choir. Her faith carried her through life as an avid church goer and a long-standing member of St. Vladimir & Olga Cathedral. Whilst living in Oakville, ON she was a
member of St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church.
She had a magnetic personality, sharp wit, keen sense of humour and always had a
positive outlook on life. You could always hear her say "SO FAR SO GOOD!"
The family would like to thank Dr. Andrea Babick for providing excellent medical care and the wonderful staff from the 3A Unit at Holy Family for their support and loving care over the past three years. Your kindness and devotion to our Mother will always be
remembered.
Pallbearers will be Roman Dlugosh, Jurij Romaniak, John Daughney, Wolodymyr Dlugosh, and Ihor Melnychuk.
Honourary Pallbearers will be John Werhun, Steve Werhun, Myron Dlugosh, and Ken Jensen.
Prayers will be held on Monday October 10, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main Street. Funeral Divine Liturgy will be on Tuesday October 11, 2016 at 10:00 p.m. at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 115 McGregor St., celebrated by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat Michael Buyachok.

I had the privilege of working with your father and brother in Rossdale , (under Fr. Izyk) when they taught our young people woodcarving. Your mother I met later and formed an instant kinship. In my broken Ukrainian , she gave me a few lessons on how to speak properly. We then met regularly as they were trying to sell their art and I in turn bought many items. I am proud to say I have many pieces in our house and they will be treasured forever. I am sorry I never got a chance to see your Mom when she came back to Wpg. , but I know she would have been very happy to be here, as she told me in Oakville, when the time was right she wanted to return to Winnipeg. I'm so sorry she is gone but know she is happy, as she is with your Dad and your brother. It's been great meeting your family and we wish you and your family the very best. - Posted by: Linda Skromeda () on: Oct 11, 2016
