MANUEL BENJAMIN RAMOS July 14, 1941 - October 13, 2016 On Thursday, October 13, 2016 at the Health Sciences Centre, after a lengthy but courageous battle with several illnesses, Manuel passed away peacefully with his wife Emilia and friend Helena at his side. Manuel will lovingly be remembered by Emilia, his wife of 51 years; and brother Norberto Maciel of California. He will also be missed by nephews and nieces Jose Borba, Teofilo Brasil, Artur Bettencourt, Margarida Batista, Maria Dutra, as well as other relatives. He will also be missed by many friends in Canada, California and Azores. Manuel was predeceased by his father Miguel, mother Serafina, sister Regina and mother-in-law Maria and father-in-law Joao, and many relatives. Manuel was born in the village of Rosais, Sao Jorge, Azores, Portugal. After returning from the Portuguese army he immigrated to Canada along with his wife Emilia in July 1965, to begin a new and better life for them. Manuel and his wife both believed that coming to Canada was the place to make a better life. Manuel first worked at Swift Meat Packing, after that he worked in various jobs and completed his working career at Leon's Furniture. Manuel and his wife Emilia also owned and operated a janitorial cleaning company for many years. Manuel wife's Emilia wishes to express her appreciation to all those who visited her husband while he was in the hospital and phoned her frequently. Many thanks as well to the doctors, nurses, and support staff at Health Sciences Centre who went above and beyond to give Manuel great care. Visitation will be on Friday, October 21 from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 22 at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Parish, 181 Austin St. N. Interment will take place at a later date in Sao Jorge, Azores.
