Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRAYMOND (RAY) THURLBECK Raymond "Ray" Thurlbeck, 92, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away peacefully, Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the Deer Lodge Veterans' Residence. Ray was born on the 17th of February, 1924, the youngest son of Albert and Myrtle Thurlbeck. Ray is survived by his wife of 39 years, Grace; his sister-in-law Shirley (Ken); two daughters, Tannis Webster and Terry (Art) Horrox, both of Winnipeg; two stepsons, James (Linda) Johnston of Ottawa and Brian (Louise) Johnston of Winnipeg; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, Ken and Les, and his grandson Mark Webster. Ray was very proud to have served as a heavy duty tank instructor at Camp Borden, during the Second World War. After his service, he returned to Winnipeg and worked for more than 40 years with CN Rail, retiring in 1984. Ray was a Mason for more than 50 years with the Fidelity Lodge, and, as a member of the Khartum Shrine, he belonged to the Fife and Drum Corps. Ray was an accomplished marksman, winning many awards. He also enjoyed bowling and dancing and loved to travel, be it by land, air or sea. Ray enjoyed life, always ready to share a smile and a laugh. In 2013, Ray and Grace moved to the Dakota House, very much enjoying the change of pace and many new friendships. The family would like to especially thank the wonderful staff at the Deer Lodge Veterans' Residence, Tower 4. A celebration of life reception will be held from 1:00 to 3:00, Saturday, October 29 at Dakota House, 1145 Dakota Street. This will be a great opportunity for people to share their memories of Ray. A private family inurnment will follow at Green Acres Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice.
