Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGRIGORIOS BENIAS July 7, 1925 - October 20, 2016 With much regret we wish to announce the peaceful passing of Grigorios Benias on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the age of 91. Dad was born in Spartohori, Greece on July 7, 1925. He was predeceased by his parents Hristos and Hrisoula, wife Elefteria, daughter Hrisoula (Sula) Konidaris, brother Andrew and sister-in-law Paraskevi. He leaves behind to cherish his memory son George (Susan), son-in-law Peter Konidaris, grandchildren Mark, Christopher and Jason Benias and Victoria Konidaris, great grandchild Deagan Benias and nieces and nephews. Dad emigrated from Greece in 1958 to give his family an opportunity for a better life. He came with nothing but a strong work ethic that he applied to whatever he did. His first job was as a painter's assistant in Thompson, Manitoba, then as an asphalt roofer. He later began working at Motor Coach Industries where he worked until his retirement. Dad enjoyed spending time with Mom at their trailer at White Lake. He loved his yard and took great pride in his garden, which was always full of all sorts of vegetables. His greatest joy was family gatherings, whether it was just a souvlaki dinner at his house or the whole Benias clan getting together for a holiday or just because. His favorite holiday was Easter which he loved and looked forward to especially in his later years. He often said that nobody did Easter like the Benias family; lots of food, drink (ouzo), music, dancing and good natured teasing. Dad and mom were able to travel back to Greece on numerous occasions which thy truly enjoyed, especially when joined by their children and their grandchildren that they could show off. While in Greece dad was often called upon to be a cantor in the village church as he had also done prior to emigrating to Canada. Dad often said that he had a very good life. He worked hard, he loved his family and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren grow up and succeed. The family would like to thank the staff at Poseidon Personal Care Home 5th floor, for their kind care and attention given to "Papou". A combined prayer and funeral service will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Ave., Friday, October 28 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so, may make a donation in Dad's memory to the Manitoba Hellenic Cultural Center, 2255 Grant Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3P 0S2. www.voyagefuneralhome.com

I got to know Grigorios when he lived at Lindenwood Manor. He often sat in a chair by the front desk teasing, joking, visiting and commenting on the world around him. His sense of humor was an absolute delight and I always looked forward to seeing him there. He was also someone with whom you could have a very profound conversation. His love for his family and his intense pride in them was always evident. We missed him when he left here and now our prayers are with you as a family. We were very privileged to have him here for so many years and remember him with great affection. - Posted by: Lois Litz (Chaplain at Lindenwood Manor) on: Oct 24, 2016

I knew Mr. Benias from Lindenwood Manor where I worked in the recreation department. I have so many good memories of Mr. Benias, one of my favorites is when I was sick with a very sore throat and he welcomed me into his home and gave me some "special" coffee. That really soothed my throat. He was a wonderful man, always loved seeing him in the front lobby welcoming us all! He is missed and I offer my condolences to his family. - Posted by: Lisa (Friend from Lindenwood Manor) on: Oct 24, 2016
