We have lost a pillar of the Point Douglas Community this week. Rita, Denis and the children have always been there for the kids and youth of the area. Whether it was keeping Norquay Community Centre open beyond the hours, forming a basketball team, picking the kids up in their van at 8 in the morning to get to games, working to bring back hockey to the area, teaching them amazing crafts, making 5 Beaconsfield viable again with programming and a place to hang out, helping kids with their homework, or planning special events that the kids might not have had the opportunity to participate in and other things to many to list ....all for the kids and the community. Her dedication and the many hours volunteering are immeasurable and will be missed by everyone who worked at Norquay CC, the City of Winnipeg Community Services Dept, GCWCC and but especially the kids and youth. I was honoured to work with her as she made Norquay CC a place where kids felt safe, was a home away from home for many and that I was able to also call her my friend. Rest in Peace Rita Barbara Maughan Verschoore - Posted by: Barbara Maughan Verschoore (community programmer and friend ) on: Nov 06, 2016

I can not think of Norquay School or Norquay Community Centre without thinking of Rita and remembering Yolanda - two ladies who did so much for the school, the community and Point Douglas families and asked nothing in return. So many kids had help at lunch time and a safe place to go and participate in activities after school, on weekends, and during summer holidays - made possible by those two energetic, kind, and caring "moms." I have always had so much respect and admiration for people who give so much to their communities, and I was in awe of Rita's dedication and commitment to the youth and families of the neighbourhood. My heart hurts for Denis, Anthony, Cassandra, Tizi, and all the rest of the family. She was such a special human being and will be missed by so many. I hope you find peace eventually in the wonderful memories you have. Hugs to all. - Posted by: Patti Lee (Norquay School - retired colleague) on: Nov 05, 2016

Our deepest and most sincere condolences to the family. Rita was a wonderful woman who gave so much opportunity to the youth in the community. Rita and Dennis were always there for us, opening up the gym at all hours to allow us to play ball. She cared deeply and wanted everyone to succeed.
