SONJA KLASSEN (nee PANKRATZ) December 2, 1921 - December 13, 2016 Our beautiful mother, Tante Sonja as she was known by many people, died peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at the Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home, Winnipeg, MB, just days after celebrating her 95th birthday with her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Hans, in 1959, and is survived by the family she loved unreservedly: her daughters Henriette and James Schellenberg, Karin and Robert Kasdorf, and Ingrid and Martin Enns, grandchildren Cara and Dave Watson, Andrea and Ben Regier, Luke and Ang Enns, Amy and Shawn Reimer, Sonja and Nick Schrag, Julia and Ryan Klassen, and Jake and Brittany Enns, and great-grandchildren Airo, Rocky, Charlie, Rose, Joy, Skye, and August. She taught us, her family, how to live generously with limited means, how to look for, and acknowledge, the good in people, how to perceive beauty everywhere, and how to be a person of deep faith without being dogmatic or judgmental. It is a legacy we are deeply grateful for. Mom was always thankful for the warm and gracious community of friends that surrounded her, and for the faith community she was a part of. We are also grateful for the loving and competent care she received over these past seven years at Bethania. We are so grateful for her presence in our lives even as we mourn her absence. Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 20, at 11:00 a.m. at the Douglas Mennonite Church, Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee or the Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home. Ruhe sanft, liebe Mutti. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Tante Sonya was my preschool teacher and was my favourite teacher. She was always patient, kind and had a warm smile for all of us. Anyone that had her as a teacher only had praise for her if you discovered that your friends had been in her class as well. One thing I remember vividly is her saying yes, yes, yes when asking her a question. It was always calming to hear her say that as you knew everything would be ok, and she wanted you to know that. My prayers are with the family as they mourn their precious Tante Sonya. I will never forget her. What a great legacy she left behind to all those who were privileged to be her student. • Dear Family, my deepest sympathies to you all. Tante Sonja was an amazing person. I was fortunate to be in one of her pre-school classes. She was always so kind & sweet. It was like she was Oma to all the children. As a child she reminded me of Mrs. Claus. There was something magical about her soft voice and sparkling eyes. Years would go between the times we saw one another but when we did she always remembered me. She had a way of making everyone feel special. She will be dearly missed by many. My thoughts & prayers are with you. God Bless. - Posted by: Sandy Shumila (nee Brosowsky) (Former preschool student) on: Dec 21, 2016

  • Tante Sonja has held a special place in my heart since I was a young child (3 1/2) and first met her at pre-school. I quickly discovered that she was a woman of great love, joy & compassion, and came to love her like another one of my own Oma's. She taught me to sing and play well with others, helped me to discover my creative & artistic side, and showed me what it meant to listen and be kind. Thank you Tante Sonja, for showing me faith & church in action. You impacted the lives of so many young children and we will do our best to continue to live out what you taught us so well when we were so very young. - Posted by: Cheryl Braun () on: Dec 18, 2016

  • Our thoughts are with you and we are praying that Nick and Sonja will be able to travel to Canada for the funeral. I would like to share a quote I ran across a few years ago. "Grief never ends, but it changes. It's a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness nor a lack of faith. It is the price of love." May you draw strength from family and friends, and celebrate Sonja's life. - Posted by: Susan and Reed Schrag (Sonja Enns Schrag 's in-laws) on: Dec 18, 2016

  • So sorry to hear of Tante Sonja's passing - your wonderful, precious mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. I will always remember her beautiful smile and welcoming ways. The statement "a person of deep faith without being dogmatic or judgmental" - so true!! Will be thinking of all of you in the days ahead as you remember, laugh, cry, organize and plan. - Posted by: Linda Martens (Penner) (Friend) on: Dec 17, 2016
