ANNE YURCIW February 26, 2017 It is with great sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of their mother and grandmother, Anne, at the age of 96 years, on February 26, 2017. Anne is survived by her loving daughter Mary (Orest), her grandchildren Michael (Lisa), Andrew and Mark, and her precious great-grandchildren Dallas, Lily, Isabelle and Luke. Anne was predeceased by her husband William in 2006, her parents Wasyl and Mokryna, and her siblings Jacob, Katrina and Anastasia. Anne was born in Mykolaiv, Demnia Ukraine. She suffered through a famine in the 1920s and experienced temporary blindness. Forced to leave her beloved homeland due to the occupancy of German Soviet forces, she ended up with her brother in Germany. In 1946 she came to England where she married her husband and gave birth to her only child, a daughter. Immigrating to Canada in 1953, they settled in Shiho, Saskatchewan with the Sebulski family until they moved to Winnipeg in 1955, where she lived in the North End for most of her life. Anne worked for Silpit Textile Industries until her retirement at 65 years of age. Anne had a deep faith and was very active in her church. She also served as President of the St. Andrews Catholic Women's League for a number of years, working tirelessly to support church activities. Anne was a Master Chef and Baker with her "over the top" pizzas, soft pillowy perogies, and paskas. Every Easter she would bake a dozen paskas to share with friends and neighbours. Her grandchildren would always welcome jars of the "best pickles in town". Anne was kind and compassionate, placing everyone's needs before her own. She was self-determined and a hard worker whose hands were never idle. Her embroidery and needlepoint were works of art and her garden a source of pride, producing the largest and reddest tomatoes in Point Douglas. Anne cherished her family, and she was a devoted mother and grandmother. She always waited for the weekly Sunday dinners (always the rib roast) that none of us could miss. She taught us self-determination, to never give up, and that we could do anything... full steam ahead. At 90 years of age (due to her failing health), Anne moved to Holy Family Home. Our small family suddenly grew larger. To the caregivers on St. Mary's, we are forever grateful for your loving and tender hands and gentle and kind souls, served with love and compassion, which greatly enhanced the quality of her life. The family is grateful for Doctors Terry and Andrea Babick for their attentive and compassionate care of our mother and grandmother. Thank you for walking this journey with us. Prayers will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 7.00 p.m. at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, March 3, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrews Ukrainian Catholic Church, 160 Euclid St. followed by interment at All Saints Cemetery. Flowers are graciously declined, and donations can be made to the Lubov SSMI Foundation in memory of Anne at 1085 Main St., Winnipeg, MB. Vichnaya Pamyat.
