Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM TATARYN July 31, 1932 - February 24, 2017 Peacefully in his sleep, Bill Tataryn passed away on February 24, 2017, at the age of 84, after a lengthy illness. He is lovingly remembered by Joan, his wife of 57 years; son Andrew (Aline), daughters Julie (Peter) and Christine (Dwayne); grandchildren Taylor (Colin) and Carlyn Tataryn (Gene), William, Christopher, and Josephine Grellier, and Conor and Rylyn Rewniak. Bill was born in the village of Brooklands to immigrant parents Iwan and Maria. Ukrainian was his first language, and it was not until his school years that he learned to speak English. Approaching his teen years, the family moved to North Winnipeg. After graduating from high school, Bill entered service with the City of Winnipeg Finance Department where he met Joan. They married in 1959, and took up residence in East Kildonan where they raised their three children and became members of Holy Eucharist Parish. It was Bill's extremely loving and generous heart that led to his involvement with many volunteer organizations over the years. He started at Melrose Community Centre as Treasurer and coach of hockey, ringette and soccer. In 1979, he was elected Treasurer of Ringette Canada. He served in that position until 1982. In 1986, Bill was elected as Financial Secretary of the Holy Eucharist Parish Council. He served a total of 10 years as Financial Secretary/Finance Board Chair. During this span, he set up a financial system both manual and computerized, described by the Archbishop's Chancery staff as "second to none" in the Archeparchy. Bill retired from the City of Winnipeg in 1989 after 38 years of service. During that time, he rose to the position of Assistant Director of Accounting; however, in the last seven years of his service he was the Financial Coordinator on a citywide project designing and implementing a new financial reporting system. After his retirement, Bill was able to commit more time to his church and his volunteerism. He spent the first two years of his retirement overseeing the renovations of the church and auditorium. He later became President of the Parish Council, President of the UCBC Holy Eucharist Branch, church Treasurer, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Holy Eucharist Council #1130. He was also a past Advisory Board member of the Holy Family Nursing Home and the Treasurer of the Sons of Ukrainian Pioneers. In 2007, Bill was inducted into the Order of St. Vladimir. He was extremely proud of this honour and of his Ukrainian heritage. In his younger years, Bill was an avid curler, reaching the Provincial final in 1963. He was a fan of the Winnipeg Jets and a long-time season ticket holder for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He also enjoyed gardening and even created an English garden in his backyard, complete with a pergola. However, Bill's greatest joy came from his family. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren and never missed one of their sporting events or activities. He loved hosting Sunday family dinners and could often be seen observing those around the table with a proud smile on his face. He was happiest when surrounded by family. In 2008, Bill suffered a sub-arachnoid hemorrhage from which he never recovered. He spent nearly nine years in chronic care at the Riverview Health Centre. He endured a lot of health issues during those years, but continued to fight valiantly. We know that he is now free and at peace in the company of the Lord. Our sincere gratitude goes out to the doctors, nurses, and staff of 2 West at Riverview Health Centre for the care that they showed Bill over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverview Health Centre or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by Fr. Michael Kwiatkowski at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Holy Eucharist Parish, 505 Watt St., followed by interment at All Saints Cemetery.
