VICTOR JOSEPH RIEGER

Date of Passing: Mar 16, 2017
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVICTOR (VIC) JOSEPH RIEGER March 1, 1926 - March 16, 2017 Our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, papa, and uncle to many, Vic, peacefully passed with family at his side. Left to mourn are his wife Mary (nee Zarazun), daughters Jane (Earl), and Debbie, grandchildren Kelley (Bob), Bobbie, Lindsay (Mike), Jaime, Suzanne (Brad), Lindsay (Vanessa), and Robynne (Jordan), great-grandchildren Tayler, Jordyn, Tarrin, McKenna, Jonas, Phoenix, Malakai, Cayden, Rowyn, Josh, Maddy, Dayton, Kohen, Walker, and in-laws Josie, Stan (Joyce), Adam (Bev). Vic was born in Winnipeg, the son of John and Mary Rieger, and had six siblings. Vic was a veteran of the Second World War, with service in the Royal Canadian Navy. In July of 1948 he married the love of his life, Mary. They enjoyed 68 years together. He first worked in the fur trade, later joining the Winnipeg Police Force and served as an officer until retirement. Vic and Mary spent their early retirement in British Columbia and later returned home to Winnipeg. Vic was loved and respected by his family and friends, and known as the Gentle Giant. With his authoritative stature and heart of gold he led his family with unconditional love, honesty and strength. He taught us all the meaning of family, accountability, and the love of laughter. He was an inspiration to us by facing life's challenges with courage, resilience, and a positive outlook, and always lending a helping hand. His wit and teasing of everyone will never be forgotten. "We will all miss you! Thanks for being you!" Special thanks to the staff of N1 North, Concordia Hospital for their positive interaction, care and compassion. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, March 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, followed by Interment at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave. Donations, in lieu of flowers, to Heart and Stroke Foundation and Alzheimer Society. A wonderful man. His wife too, a wonderful woman. While with Consumer Care Maids, I cared for both their home on Springfield Road as well as their condo. Enjoyed the twice monthly visits to their home. So sorry to hear of Vic's passing. - Posted by: Debbie Winterburn (Former houseKeeper) on: Apr 09, 2017

Vic was a joy to visit with while I cut his hair. He said he deserved a discount because he had less hair than some. I thought I should charge him extra for a finders fee because I had to look for it. He was always quick with a joke. I know you will miss him but I am sure all the great memories you created with him will always keep him close to you. My sincerest condolences. - Posted by: Eileen Goertz (Friend) on: Mar 21, 2017

Vic was one of a kind and a man I admired as my partner on the cruiser cars for a couple of years. He was a mentor to me being the younger Police Officer and pointed me in the right direction. I met Vic and his wife when they lived in Cassidy on Vancouver Island. After that our paths went different ways and I did not get to spend more time with Victor. I am now in Kelowna BC and want his family to know you are in our thoughts at this difficult time. Vic will be missed by me and many others. - Posted by: Jack Reay (Friend and fellow WPS Pipe Band member) on: Mar 21, 2017

My condolences to the family on your loss of a wonderful man. Great memories of "Uncle Vic" and "Aunt Mary" (as we affectionately called them) and the girls back in the day on Stalker Bay. Wish I could attend to see everyone but laid up with a broken ankle but wanted to make sure I sent my condolences to the family. - Posted by: Allison Schmidt (Audrain) (Former neighbour) on: Mar 21, 2017
