Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJACOB FUNK October 23, 1930 - April 3, 2017 After a lengthy illness, and with his family around him, on April 3, 2017 Jacob was called home to be with his Heavenly Father at the age of 86 years. Jacob is lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Agnes (Martens), children Jack (Maria) Funk, Irene (Gerhard) Kornelsen, son-in-law Tim Stevens, nine grandchildren with their spouses, nine great-grandchildren, and brother Johann. Sadly predeceased by daughter Diana Stevens in 2013, and one brother. Jacob was born in Zagradovka, Ukraine. His family endured famine, the death of his father in 1933, and many hardships. The Second World War brought separation from his mother and two brothers. Jacob was on his own from the age of 13. He survived the war alone, and not yet 15 years of age. With the aid of the Red Cross and Mennonite Central Committee, he was able to make contact with an uncle in Canada and in late 1948, at the age of 18, he was able to immigrate to Canada. Jacob was a carpenter and home builder for many years. He also enjoyed volunteering for building projects led by Trans World Radio in retirement. Jacob was a man who loved and trusted God. He was thankful for the blessings God gave him, his loving wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a wonderful home in Canada. Funeral service will be held Friday, April 7, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church, 145 Henderson Hwy., with viewing prior to the service. Interment will follow in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9.
