WALTER ALBERT JENNINGS September 28, 1917 April 7, 2017 Following a brief illness, Walter peacefully passed away with his family by his side, at 99 years of age. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Gloria (Del), Carol (Gary), Don and Lois (Bob); his grandchildren, Cory, Trevor (Gerri), Ryan (Julia), Ashley (Paul), Sean and Dustin (Tiffiny); seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by his loving wife Victoria of 64 years; daughter-in-law Denise; grandson Tyler; foster granddaughter Amora; brother Leonard; sisters, Ada and Winnifred; parents, Caroline and William. Walter proudly served overseas in the Second World War with The Winnipeg Grenadiers. Walter worked for the Simmons Bedding Company where he met the love of his life, Victoria. He briefly worked for the Midland Railway, after which he began a career with The Winnipeg Transit. He retired in 1982 after 35 years of service. Throughout his life, he was involved in the community in many ways. Walter served as a School Trustee in the St. Vital area and was a long-time member of Regents Park United Church. He was a dedicated volunteer with Glenlee Community Club and after 45 years of volunteer service with the Community Club, the sports facility was renamed to Walter Jennings Sports Facility; an honour which in his words left him "speechless". In 1997 Walter received the Premier's Volunteer Service Award. Walter had many interests, some of which included gardening, he loved his rose bushes and he especially loved his fishing trips with "the boys". Walter also enjoyed his trips on his scooter to Tim Hortons. Walter was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Walter's homecare workers for their years of taking care of him before he transitioned to Deer Lodge Centre. We would also like to thank the staff at Deer Lodge Centre, Tower 4,4th Floor for their care, compassion and support. There will be a celebration of his life on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Road United Church, 613 St. Mary's Road; with Rev. Philip Read officiating. Interment to follow at Green Acres Funeral Home & Cemetery, Hwy #1 East at Navin Road, Winnipeg, MB. Memorial donations may be made to Manitoba Riding For the Disabled Association or to a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • We always think there is so much time. Then over the years people drift apart. I never heard of Walter’s passing until recently. Uncle Walter was married to Auntie Vic (my father John’s sister). As kids we visited as families often. So many happy memories of Gloria, Carol, Lois and Don. Dinners on Poplarwood Ave; gardening; camping. Uncle Walter was soft spoken and so helpful to all. I last saw him at my mom’s (Kristjana) funeral in 2010. My thoughts are with you all. Love Ron. - Posted by: Ron Zaporzan ( Calgary) (Nephew) on: Jul 01, 2022

  • I just read of Walter's passing in the Transit union magazine. I first met Walter in 1976 when I started at Winnipeg Transit. Walter was a genius with bus wiring. He was always soft spoken but happy to share his knowledge. I learned a lot from him then. I really enjoyed working with him. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Kevin Champagne (Friend and co worker) on: Nov 10, 2017

May he rest in peace. May his Memory be Eternal. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Prayers, and Hugs. - Posted by: Cathy, Teresa and Ollie Evanyshyn (friends) on: Apr 12, 2017

  • Walter was a caring friend and a wonderful neighbor to us. Whenever we were gardening or doing some work outside, he would wonder over to chat or offer some help and/or advice. It was always a comfort to look outside and see him working on his beautiful roses or just going on his daily walks. We will miss him terribly. - Posted by: Janine Ren (Neighbor) on: Apr 12, 2017

  • Lois, I am so sorry to hear of your dads passing. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. - Posted by: Jackie Jakob (friend of Lois & Bob) on: Apr 12, 2017

  • My condolences to the family. Uncle Walter and Auntie Vic were such an integral part of my childhood. I remember their yearly trips to visit my mom and us kids in Markham, Ontario, then they even kept in touch with me and my family after mom died. He was never too busy for you and he always had a terrible joke to tell! His family always came first and I'm sure you will all miss him terribly. • My "Uncle Walter" was someone special to me. Over the last 4+ years, I wrote to him every month and soon I became "my Debbie" to him. It makes me smile just thinking about his kindness and love...He always had more to give. Though he was unable to write me back, he said he enjoyed "visiting with me" through my letters. It didn't matter that he couldn't write back though, because I could just pick up the phone and talk to him. I will greatly miss sitting at my desk and visiting with him every month. Goodbye Uncle Walter...but only for now!...I will see you in Heaven. Please say hello to my Dad ❤ - Posted by: Debbie Parsons (Daughter of brother-law) on: Apr 11, 2017

  • I wish to send all the family my sincere condolences. Walter was always like my other Dad. I can remember when I was growing up he would stop at home to pick me up before going to Glenlee to see how the new building was coming along. I always considered it "his" community club. After the club was built , I used to "help" him repair the club's chairs in his basement workshop. Well as much as a 5 yo could help. I remember when I was older, he invited me on a fishing trip with a car load of the boys. I think I caught only one fish on the trip, but had my full limit when he dropped me back home. I am truly sorry that I will not be able to attend his funeral to pay my respects that such a great man truly deserves, as I am in New Orleans on holidays. - Posted by: Drew Barsalou () on: Apr 11, 2017
