ELLY PENNER (nee PAULS) It is with great sadness that we have to say goodbye to our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, Elly Penner. Elly embarked on her life's journey on April 14, 1929, on a farm in the vicinity of the village of Osborne, Manitoba. Here she grew up with her three brothers and two sisters. She attended school at Osborne Elementary School and completed her education at Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna, Manitoba. In addition to that, Elly spent two years at Winkler Bible School. By nature, Elly possessed a mild manner which was reflected in her choice of vocation. When she transitioned to city life, she took up residency at the Mary Martha Home and obtained employment as a domestic aide. Her compassionate care for others opened the door for a position in a care home operated by Reverend William Falk. Elly then decided to further her education by taking practical nurses training and this lead to employment for many years at the Winnipeg Clinic with Dr. Isaac. On December 27, 1966, Elly married Peter Penner and accepted the responsibility of maintaining a household with a widower and four children. During her time on the farm with Peter, she grew a huge garden and cooked many great meals for the family from her harvest. Upon retiring from the farm, Peter and Elly moved to Winnipeg. During this period, they did a lot of travelling. One memorable trip was to visit Alice and Dan in Portugal. Elly went to be with her Lord while in the care of the Bethania Nursing Home on May 18, 2017. Elly was predeceased by husband Peter; sisters, Irma Pauls and Helga Hamm (brother-in-law Ed Hamm); and her brother John Pauls. She leaves to cherish her memory her brothers, Rudy (Mary) and Irwin (Irene); her children, Ruth Moir (Ron), John Penner (Wilhelmina), Alice Cover (Dan) and Ernest Penner (Marnie); grandchildren, Shane, Sheryl, Anna, Heather, Matthew, Lisa and their spouses; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., at Portage Avenue Church, 1420 Portage Avenue, with viewing prior to the service. Interment to follow in LaSalle Mennonite Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson Society or a charity of your choice.
