SIGURLAUG SOFFIA COONEY October 6, 1915 - May 22, 2017 It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful mom, amma, long amma, aunty and friend. Mom was a truly extraordinary, amazing lady who loved beautifully and laughed often. Soffia was predeceased by her best friend, soulmate and husband Albyn; her siblings, Thora, Emily, Alda, Oscar, Gudmundur, Kristjan, Thorbud, Ingibjorg, and a brother in infancy; her beloved parents, Margret and Kristinn Goodman; and daughters-in-law, Joan Cooney and Sandra D'Aoust. Mom is survived by her children, Marvin, Carolyn (Wayne), Evelyn (Gerry), and Rosalyn (Patti); grandchildren, Glenn (Jaqueline), Greg (Crystal), Sherrie, Scott (Cyndi), Michelle, and Kristin (Darolyn); and great-grandchildren to Ryan, Cole, Emma, Dalas, Taris, Jack, Daniella, as well as many nieces and nephews. Soffia was born in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland and came on a very adventurous journey to Canada in June of 1925. The family settled in Selkirk. In 1946 Mom and Dad married and raised their family in Elmwood. After Dad passed away, Mom lived in Betelstadur in Winnipeg, then with Rosalyn for a time. She was a very active member of The First Lutheran Church for many years. She became a resident of Betel Gimli in May of 2006. The family would like to thank Dr. R.C. Patel and the wonderful staff at Betel. As Mom said "the people who look after me here love me". Flowers are gratefully declined, donations may be made to the Betel Home Foundation Gimli Memorial Fund. • I don't know if this will reach you, but I'm trying anyway. I live in Brandon, MB and do not get Wpg. news often. I will always remember Auntie Soffia as a warm, kind and remarkable lady. It was a privilege to know her. Always had a ready smile for "us kids". Her special treats she would bring to family gatherings will also be remember and not easily duplicated (I've tried). Sorry we lost touch over the years. She will be remembered fondly. Hoping all of you and your families are well. - Posted by: Susan Fedorowich Hutton (Niece) on: Jul 22, 2017

  • Aunty Sophie had the most amazing smile and a real gentleness that I remember well. Our very large Cooney family spent wonderful times together throughout my growing up years. Many get-togethers, family weddings, Christmas time and at the lake. Uncle Albyn, Aunty Sophie and their children were always fun to be around. So many good memories. Condolences to the family and God Bless. - Posted by: Tina (Fedorowich) Law (niece) on: Jul 22, 2017

  • I was looking for a friend's obituary and this beautiful face appeared which brought back such fond and special memories. I grew up next door to the Cooneys and was best friends with her daughter Rosalyn. Mrs. Cooney was the sweetest mom on the block and I loved her Icelandic cooking and baking. My favorite was her vinarterta and she always made sure I got a piece. My brothers and I often speak of her with nothing but fond memories. If any of the girls read this, I would love to get in contact with you! - Posted by: Laurie Smith (Todd) (neighbor and friend) on: Jun 13, 2017

  • I remember Mrs. Cooney at Gimli, where I was friends with you three girls when we stayed at the cabin at 64 4th. Long time ago, 60 years, give or take, but the face still brought back happy memories. She lived a long life. My condolences Carolyn, Evelyn, and Rosalyn (though you were "little" and more of a tag-along for our antics). You can search me on facebook. - Posted by: Roberta (Hill) Beach (acquaintance) on: Jun 04, 2017
