MARIA NEUFELD Maria Neufeld (nee Friesen), of Winnipeg, Manitoba, died on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Donwood Manor Personal Care Home. She was born on July 18, 1930 in Alexanderwhohl, Ukraine. Her early years were difficult, filled with religious and ethnic persecution, famine and war. Her father was taken by the Russian military as a prisoner, never to be seen again. She, along with her mother and sisters, spent much of the Second World War fleeing towards Germany, often not too far from the moving battle lines. After the war, she immigrated to Paraguay where she worked in a hospital. In 1955, she immigrated to Canada and worked at Concordia Hospital as a cook. She married Hans Karl Neufeld on October 15, 1960 and dedicated her time to raising three children. Maria was a great mother and loving wife. In spite of difficult memories of her early years and many physical limitations due to her progressing muscular dystrophy, she was always thankful for how many blessings she had experienced in life. Her joy in suffering was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She found much strength and peace to face any challenge from her faith in Jesus Christ. She is survived by her husband Hans Karl; her children, John (Kathy), Marilyn (Dan) and Victor (Elaine); grandchildren, Jenelle (Justin), Cory (Kristi), Matthew (Jessica), Carson and Tayler; and two great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Rylee. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church, 1315 Gateway Road, Winnipeg, with viewing prior to the service. Interment at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
