MARIA (MARY) FAST Mary from "Mary's Diner" It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mary Fast on July 6, 2017, at Oakview Place Extendicare, at the age of 92 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her three sons Larry (Darlene), Don (Lynn) and David (Elley); daughter Molly; grandchildren Heather (Greg), Grant, Chris (Kirsten), Jody (Kris), Shawn, Skyler and Shayne; and great-grandchildren Zach, Dylan, Noah and Greysen. She was predeceased by her husband Willie, three brothers and two sisters. Surviving are her sister Helen, and brothers John and Harry. Mary was born in Hanover (Steinbach), Manitoba and spent her childhood on the family farm. She moved to Winnipeg in her 20s. She met her husband Willie on a blind date at the Belgium Club. The rest is history. Mary's last job was running the student canteen for the medical and dental students at the Faculty of Medicine from 1966 to 1990. They renamed the canteen in her honour and it will always be known as Mary's Diner. A retirement plaque reads, "Den mother to students and faculty - We love you Mary". Mom's passions were her community work at West End Community Club, sewing and baking; family members still talk about Mom's famous butter tarts. Starting in 1962, Mom spent her summers at Toniata Beach, she loved her time with family and friends at the lake. She will be remembered for her sense of humour, big smile, kind heart, positive attitude and compassion for others. She always made everyone feel welcome. We love you and we all miss you. A special thanks to the staff at Arlington Haus and Oakville Place Extendicare for taking such wonderful care of Mom through the years. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 14, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at North Kildonan United Church, 174 Pentland Street. Please use back entrance. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-586-8044

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Sorry to hear about your Mom. We still remember the early days at Toniata and all the fun and excitement we enjoyed with all the families in the campground. Mary was certainly an anchor in that community. And, of course, my Mom knew her through the HSC and "Mary's Diner". May the memories of happier days help you through these difficult times. - Posted by: Dan & Bonnie Siemens () on: Jul 28, 2017
