He is survived by his sisters Erna (Henry) and Irene, niece Cheri (Marc), nephews Rod (Carolyne), Dan and Mike (Kelly), and great-nephews and nieces: Brittney, Thomas, Cole, Isabelle and Riel. Alvin was previously married to Susan and Ute. Alvin attended Greenway School, Westgate, Gordon Bell, Chief Peguis and River East. After high school, he trained as an electrician and worked in Winnipeg, Calgary and Toronto. Sixteen years later he decided he needed a change of careers and in 1992 started training as a customs officer. He worked actively at this for 14 years and on November 28, 2006 went on disability. He suffered from depression and anxiety for most of his life. Alvin loved watching numerous sports and enjoyed collecting music and movies. He was very knowledgeable about movies and celebrities and was thrilled when, on many occasions, he got to meet them at the airport in his role as a customs officer. In this capacity, he also was able to translate for German visitors since he was fluent in German. In his mid 20s Alvin became a Christian and was baptized at the First Mennonite Church in Calgary. He never wavered in his faith and was a strong believer until his death. The family wishes to thank Dr. Susan Cuvelier and Dr. David Peretz at Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Elkin and the compassionate staff at the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit. A come and go reception for the family and friends to follow on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street.
