DEBORAH CINDY MARUK April 10, 1969 October 15, 2017 Our Debbie was a wonderful woman who was deeply loved, is missed and will always be cherished. She was an amazing daughter, sister, granddaughter and friend. No matter what life threw her way, she met it with a bright, radiant smile; always up for life's next adventure. In a hurry to make the most of life Debbie arrived two months early, minutes behind her sister, weighing 2 lbs 13 oz. to make headlines in a medical journal in 1969. She had a happy, active childhood and made friends easily. At U. of M., she completed a BA in Arts and in Education while working several jobs and with an active social life. After graduation, she fulfilled her dream and spent 11 wonderful years teaching English in Tokyo, Osaka and Okayama Japan. While there she made many incredible friends particularly her best friend, Jackie Howlett. Debbie explored the world seeing Europe, China, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia and Mexico. Back home in 2006, with two kittens, Squeak and Babe, which gave her endless joy, comfort and cuddles. Deb's free time was spent enjoying concerts at Assiniboine Park, the theatre, local beaches, exploring parks, sipping drinks on a patio and spending time with family and friends. If you wanted to know her illness, she would say "cancer but there are others much worse off than me. I'm good." Although her prognosis was dire, she battled on, living life fully and survived several years beyond the doctor's expectations. Our family would like to give a heart-felt thank you to Dr. Pamela Hebbard, Dr. James Paul, the staff at CancerCare Clinics, GH3 ward and MICU at HSC. Special thanks to Dr. Walley Temple and his team at Foothills Hospital in Calgary. Debbie felt truly blessed to have such wonderful, caring people on her team. She will be sadly missed by her loving parents, Michael and Carol Maruk, sister Michelle, brother Colin and grandmother Mary Heinrichs, and all of her aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 20, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 637 Buckingham Rd. Deb loved bright colours especially red, so colourful clothing encouraged. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, Never Alone Foundation or a charity of your choice in Debbie's honour. www.voyagefuneralhomes.com

  • My life has been truly changed by knowing Debbie. Her strength, positivity, compassion for others, and her fantastic smile and sense of humour made her stand out from the others. Our groups of Japan friends have spent the last few days sharing our favourite stories and anecdotes about Debbie, and we have laughed and cried at our memories. All my love goes out to her parents, and Colin and Michelle xxxx - Posted by: Jacqueline Howlett (Very close friend) on: Oct 20, 2017

  • I am so saddened to hear of Debbie's passing. I had the pleasure of teaching Debbie and Michelle in Gr.8 at IHMS. I also remember her as a hard worker, and she always had a beautiful smile. To the Maruk family, so sorry for this incredible loss. My prayers are with you. - Posted by: Sharon Naurocki (teacher at IHMS) on: Oct 19, 2017

  • I am so saddened to hear this news. I went to school with Debbie and have not seen her in many many years... I remember an ever smiling gentle soul with an excellent sense of humour. I remember someone who you could trust with anything. I remember her being one of the first girls I ever danced with at a school dance (she was nice to dance with the shortest guy in the class!) I am saddened also that we lost touch but I am happy that she lived life on her terms and so fully. I wish all of you my deepest condolences! - Posted by: Adrian Hawaleshka (schoolmate ) on: Oct 19, 2017

  • So sorry for your loss! I was in the same grade as Debbie & Michelle at IHMS. Wondered what ever happen to her but after reading this passage she lived life on her terms, which is beautiful. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. - Posted by: Mark Galarnyk (went to Immaculate Heart of Mary School together) on: Oct 19, 2017

  • So sorry for your loss! Our deepest sympathy to your entire family. I will so miss Deb so much, since she so expended my vocabulary over the years with words like nonconformist and rocked the pink poncho. I will forever treasure our long bus rides to Junior High, sleep overs (with her eyes slightly open), all her letters from Japan and the time we had to hang out in Calgary Foothills. We never did make it to the CN tower for lunch or win that million dollars we had all allocated how we would spend it; but it was always fun making plans. Sending Hugs to you all. • My deepest sympathies to Colin and family in the loss of your sister at such a tender age. Colin spoke of Debbie's health challenges over the past couple of years, when we visited with him in Mexico. May you have peace in knowing she is no longer suffering. - Posted by: Jackie H Vincent (Friend of Colin's) on: Oct 19, 2017

  • Very sorry for your loss - Posted by: Robert Dashner (Friend of the family ) on: Oct 18, 2017

  • Debbie, Michelle and I were friends in our teen years. We survived Pastor Buenting's confirmation boot camp, enjoyed many trips out to Luther Village, and other youth group events. I don't remember Debbie ever NOT having a smile on her face. Sending sincere condolences to the entire Maruk family. - Posted by: Jackie Fritz (Friend) on: Oct 18, 2017

  • Our deepest sympathy. A true treasure that will be missed. - Posted by: Tom and Velvet Roche () on: Oct 18, 2017

  • We would like to offer our deepest sympathies to the Maruk family during this difficult time. Unfortunately we never had the pleasure of meeting Deborah, but Mike,Carol and Colin spoke of her often with love and admiration. The obituary was very well written and it sounds like Deborah had a very full exciting live prior to her battle with cancer. She is in gods hands now and will be greatly missed. • Debbie was without a doubt, the strongest, empathetic person, that we have ever known. With her positive outlook in life, even with her cancer, Debbie always made everyone around her feel important (she always was positive and her smile lit up the room to the point even if you had a bad made she made you feel unbelievably thankful to be her friend). Evan and I feel blessed to be friends to the Maruk Family, and at this time we want to send our love and support to all of you, to help you cope with this unbearable loss. We will continue to have you in our thoughts and Prayers and you travel down this road. Love Evan and Sara Michaud - Posted by: Evan & Sara Michaud (Family Friends) on: Oct 18, 2017
