Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROGER CHARLES GARROD After a brief illness Roger Garrod passed away at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Patricia Garrod, and nephew Adam Garrod. He leaves behind his wife Helen, brother Howard (Nancy), nephew Michael (Sharon), Helen's sister Margie, and many other caring relatives on Helen's side. Roger was born in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England in 1950, and immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1954. His family lived in a number of different cities until he finished high school. He arrived in Winnipeg at the age of 16 to attend the University of Manitoba to study architecture. He met Helen on campus in 1971, and they were married in 1973. Roger enjoyed different careers, working for an architectural firm in Ottawa, then pursuing graphic arts. Eventually he returned to the University of Manitoba, achieving a Master of Science degree in 1984, specializing in Botany. Around the same time period he built the house that he and Helen have resided in for over 30 years. Upon graduation he worked for Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and eventually moved to Public Works and Government Services Canada in Environmental Services. Although Roger had many interests in life, an enduring passion has been his involvement in the lives of young people. He was committed to coaching and training youth through both scouting and archery. Upon retirement in 2008, Roger pursued his interests to the fullest, including skiing, biking, canoeing, curling, kendo, kyudo, travelling and spending precious time with friends and family. He continued to play an important role in the archery community at the local and national level as a competitor, coach, mentor, judge and organizer. He judged locally, nationally and internationally, including Italy, China, Poland, USA, Mexico and Central America. Roger loved to travel with his wife Helen. They explored Canada from coast to coast and the north and made many international trips. Those trips always included exciting outdoor activities which were so much a part of who Roger was. We would like to sincerely express our appreciation for the care Roger received at both the Health Sciences Centre and Riverview Health Centre. We are especially grateful to Doctor Sochocki, Doctor Garcia and the specialists and caregivers who were so generous with their time and expertise. If friends so desire donations may be made in Roger's name to either Canadian Diabetes Association or the Canadian Cancer Society. A celebration of Roger's life will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 12 in the Qualico Family Centre by the duck pond in Assiniboine Park. This information is also posted on the Cropo Funeral Chapel website.

I knew Roger through archery. He was one of my first coaches. From him I learnt a great deal about archery and he introduced me to training for the mental component of competition. I have many fond memories of shooting with him at Tenex over the years, of becoming coaching colleagues and asking him to clarify a rule or make a calling on an arrow as I always knew he'd make the most fair call and knew all the most current rules. I was very sad to hear about his passing. Helen, my condolences on your loss. Roger will be missed by so many. - Posted by: Avril (Friend) on: Nov 01, 2017

Dear Helen and Family, On behalf of the Board and membership of Archery Canada, please accept my sincere condolences and gratitude for Roger's contribution to archery! I have received other condolences from archers around the world, he has been recognized by both World Archery Amercias and World Archery for his work for us all! Roger's contribution to archery is too much to detail, his work on the rule book was stellar, we always had a complete accurate rule book to work with! More than that, we always had a voice of reason whenever we had need of an interpretation of a rule or situation. From simple shooting rules to complex team issues, Roger was always there with a timely interpretation that was fair and accurate. His contribution to archery judging in Canada is immense, we will miss his cool demeanor on the tournament line and behind the scenes on so many archery situations! A great man is gone, we miss him and thank your family for sharing him with us! We will always appreciate his contribution! Al - Posted by: Al Wills (President, Archery Canada) on: Nov 01, 2017

Dear Helen: My sincere condolences on the passing of Roger. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. I had much respect and admiration for Roger 'the person' and for his work as a volunteer within the archery community. He was a committed and passionate volunteer at the community, provincial, national and international levels. As you are aware, I am most familiar with Roger's leadership and work with Archery Canada where he served in several capacities, such as: Chair of the Rules Committee; as a member of the Judges Committee; and as a judge at numerous national and international tournaments. Roger's work ethic, attention to detail and professionalism were unmatched. Without a doubt Roger made many valuable contributions to Archery Canada and to the Canadian archery community. It was a pleasure to have worked with Roger the volunteer and to have grown to know Roger the person. I will miss Roger and I know that I am not alone in this regard. Sincerely, Scott Ogilvie Former Executive Director Archery Canada - Posted by: Scott Ogilvie (Colleague) on: Oct 31, 2017

Roger was an amazing man, who was defiantly one of the most thorough coworkers I ever had the pleasure to work with....a regulatory safeguard for Canada. Roger will be missed by so many, and unfortunately I will be away and not able to share stories celebrating his life. - Posted by: Peter Mayberry (Coworker and former Scouter ) on: Oct 30, 2017

Dear Helen, There are no words that can describe the depth of which Roger had an effect on my life. When I was younger I couldn’t fully appreciate the wealth of knowledge that he was slowly trying to pass on to me and only later on in adulthood did I come to realize the impact he had in shaping my view and understanding of the natural world. I can’t help but think of him and thank him every time I walk through the woods and can easily name off plants, trees and any assortment of critters. My heart goes out to you, and I wish that I could be there at the celebration of his life to meet you again and see all the others that held him so dearly. This might explain why I had a sudden urge to dig out one of my old bows again. That was his way, to plant the seeds of curiosity and let them blossom and bloom, and he was always there to tend his garden. - Posted by: Lindsay Thompson (Friend) on: Oct 30, 2017

Rogers love of Archery was what brought our worlds together. Roger not only showed his love for the sport through teaching, coaching, and leadership positions but thru day to day participation and interaction within the Archery community. Few have given as much to advance a sport they love. Helen, we are thankful that you shared so much of Roger’s time with us. Our hope is that you will find strength and comfort in knowing how much he meant to us all. - Posted by: Ray Myers (Friend) on: Oct 22, 2017

Our condolences Helen. We are so sorry for your loss. Roger was a good mentor to many youths and will not be forgotten. The many scouts and their leaders including Kim and I that he helped to teach and support for many years have become better people from knowing him. The knowledge he shared with all of us will and has been passed on to our children so Roger, you will be with all of us forever. You were a good friend. Roger loved Archery and that is what brought our worlds together. Over the years he taught, coached, officiated, dreamed, sawed, hammered and far too infrequenty took an evening off to just participate in the sport he loved and gave so much back to. There have been many people who contributed to the well being of our little archery range along the way but perhaps none have or ever will show the unshelfish love for the sport that he has. We count it an honour to have known Roger. Helen there are no words that could hold enough meaning to say how Much Roger has meant too us or to fully describe your great loss. Find strength in the memory that never will leave us. With deep sympathy, Ray Myers and all the folks at Heartland - Posted by: Ray Myers (Ftiend) on: Oct 21, 2017
