Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANNE MARIE CHECKRYN It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Anne Marie Checkryn on Monday, October 30, 2017 at Middlechurch Home. Anne is predeceased by her beloved husband Leon, who died in 1988 and was the last surviving sibling in a family of six. Anne will be dearly missed by her daughter Barbara and son-in-law Brian Rivers, of Eagle Hill, Alberta, son Leon and daughter-in-law Pat, of Lethbridge, Alberta and their children, Jason and Suzanne, of Calgary, Alberta, Aaron, of Innisfail, Alberta and his children, Olivia and Gabriel. Anne was born in Fort William, Ontario, July 22, 1921 and was the last surviving of a family of six. Anne's life was spent working hard from cleaning homes to soda shops, wiring planes during the war and working at Eaton's. One of her enjoyments was getting together with her friends at the local bowling alley, where she met Leon and married in 1948. In 1949, they moved to Terrace Bay, Ontario, where they had "the best 10 years of their life" with Anne learning Bridge, bowling and making the best homemade pies and spaghetti sauce for the café that Leon managed. In 1959, they purchased Transcona Bowl and moved back to Leon's home town of Winnipeg. Although Anne was a private person, she was a loyal friend, a supportive wife, a gracious lady who was admired for how well she looked after her home, her family and herself. She always said that Estee Lauder should be paying her. Funeral service will take place on Monday, November 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Interment at Green Acres after reception. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg, 280 Balderstone Rd., West St. Paul, MB R4A 4A6. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of B2 at the Middlechurch Home, for their care and compassion in Anne's final days. Their support was more than appreciated.

Our deepest Condolences to Leon and Barb and the whole Checkryn family. I have fond memories of Mr. and Mrs. Checkryn from the early days in Transcona, spending some time together as families when Leon married my sister Pat. I am glad that Mrs. Checkryn lived such a good long life, got to know all of her grandchildren and stayed active for so long. Our thoughts are with the family. God Bless. - Posted by: Tina and Gil Law (in-laws) on: Nov 10, 2017

I just found out about Anne's passing and am sorry to hear the news. I recall many events where my parents, who have since passed on, socialized with Anne and Leon several years ago. The Transcona Bowling Alley that they owned was one place I remember well. I offer my sincere condolences on behalf of our family. - Posted by: Al Chovanchak (Family friend) on: Nov 08, 2017

Will always remember the day I met you. It was so full of "What will be?" Hard difficult changes to life. So admired your mother as she awoke each morning and cared for herself with dignity and purpose. She was an example of making the best and looking your best! Love and comfort to you all. - Posted by: Kathleen MacDonald (Nurse / Friend) on: Nov 07, 2017

I have two special memories of Anne. The first is when my husband Ron & I stopped in to see Anne when we were coming back from Toronto and Terrace Bay Ontario where my aunt Olga and husband had lived. I found out that Anne and Leon had owned the bowling alley next to to my aunt and uncle's business in Terrace Bay for many years and that the two ladies have been avid bridge partners together. I had already known Barbara in Alberta for many years but hadn't known that our families had had that connection before talking to Anne. My second special memory was Barbara's wonderful 60th birthday party in Olds Alberta that Anne had contribted to and to which we were privileged to be invited. We all traveled by limo to a special restaurant in Olds to celebrate the occasion, thanks in great part to Anne's generosity. i will be forever grateful. - Posted by: Sandy Armstrong (daughter Barbara's friend) on: Nov 06, 2017

Sorry to hear of Auntie Ann's passing. I remember one time when Angel and I went to Winnipeg in 1981 or so. We stopped in to see Anne and Leon for a visit. She insisted on Leon taking us out for supper. We didn't want to impose, but no was not an option. We went to a restaurant and had a very nice dinner and a great time. I always looked forward to their visits in the summer at my parents camp, as it was always a fun time. RIP Auntie - Posted by: Cory and Angel Ashe (Grand nephew) on: Nov 05, 2017
