FRANK SMID May 14, 1943 - November 4, 2017 Peacefully on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Bethesda Regional Hospital in Steinbach, Frank Smid passed away at the age of 74 years after several months battling lung cancer. Left to lovingly remember him are his wife of 50 years, Susan (Breukelman), and his daughters Sandra (Gerald) Trudeau and Valerie Smid (Steven Cole). He is also survived by his brothers and sisters Anne (Egbert) Breukelman, John Smid, Audrey (Lloyd) denBoer, Sydney Smid, and Sylvia (Henry) Kloosterhuis, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Frank was predeceased by his parents, Daniel and Sietske Smid, father-in-law and mother-in-law Albert and Zwaantje Breukelman, sisters-in-law Louise Smid (wife of John Smid) and Tami Smid (wife of Sydney Smid), brothers-in-law from Susan's side Albert Breukelman (husband of Ann Breukelman) and Allan Streutker (husband of Rika Streutker) and niece from Susan's side, Nancy Breukelman (daughter of Albert and Ann Breukelman). He was born on May 14, 1943 in Geleen, Limburg, The Netherlands, oldest of six children. He immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of six in 1950. He spent most of his earlier life in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He met the love of his life, Susan Breukelman, and they married on July 21, 1967 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Frank worked at Canadian National Railway as a pipefitter for 33 years, retiring in 1996. In 1972, Frank and Susan along with their daughters settled in the Ste. Anne, Manitoba area and established a beef and hay farm. He greatly enjoyed caring for his cattle and a soft spot for animals was passed on to his daughters. Frank and Susan sold the farm in 1998 and moved to their present home in Mitchell, Manitoba. Even after the move, his heart always yearned for life with his cattle and he enjoyed reminiscing about them. In retirement, he kept himself busy with his other interest - driving vehicles for car dealers in Steinbach. His hope and faith were firmly rooted in Jesus Christ and we take solace knowing he is in his loving Saviour's arms. "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38, 39 The family would like to thank his medical and care staff with special mention of those at CancerCare Manitoba at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre who always showed the utmost care and concern for him and Susan as they dealt with his condition. An interment with family and close friends will take place on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at the Heritage Cemetery, 385 Loewen Blvd., Steinbach, Manitoba. This will be followed by a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. at the Transcona Christian Reformed Church, 131 Victoria Avenue West, Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to CancerCare Manitoba. Arrangements by BIRCHWOOD FUNERAL CHAPEL 1-204-346-1030 OR 1-888-454-1030
