TED (TAEKE) ALTHUIS After a short struggle with cancer Ted (Taeke) Althuis passed away at Seven Oaks Hospital in the early morning of December 16, 2017. Ted was born on July 8, 1946 in the small town of Menaldum in the Netherlands. He was the youngest of five children born to his parents Saakje and Ijsbrand Althuis. Ted was truly the baby of the family as his next closest sibling was over 10 years older than he. Ted was the last surviving child of his family, his last remaining sibling having passed away several months ago. Ted immigrated to Canada in 1967 as a young man and began working on his sister's and brother-in-law's dairy farm near Thunder Bay, Ontario. Physically speaking Ted was well suited to farm life as he was a strong man and stood approximately 6 feet 8 inches tall. Ted eventually moved to Winnipeg where he worked diligently at Kaye's Auction House for many years. Ted assisted in packing and moving furniture to, and around, the auction warehouse and over the years became somewhat of a fixture at the Thursday night auctions. He made many contacts in the community during these years. Ted's mobility became more limited in recent years and he stayed mostly around home. Despite his decreased strength Ted was still always willing to have a strong coffee or two and talk about the superiority of the cheese and chocolate from his "old country". In Ted's last months of life he occasionally attended meetings at Faith Church and became friends with a number of people there. The funeral service for Ted will be held at Faith Church (386 McGregor St.) on Friday, December 22 at 11:00 a.m. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
