BARBARA (BARB) MACKIE (née VIRTUE) It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barb on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Health Science Centre following a brief illness. Barb was born in Winnipeg, on November 22, 1939. She grew up and attended school in River Heights. She married Norm Mackie in 1960 and they resided in Westwood. Barb is survived by her son Ron, granddaughter Brittany, sister Jean Pollock (Bob), brother- in- law Sandy Mackie, close friend Tom Carlyle and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Norm (1974) and her parents (Ronald and Constance Virtue). Barb retired from the T.D. Bank after 40 years of service. She took the U & R Taxation course and worked there part-time as well as the Race Track, Elections Canada and Statistics Canada. Barb enjoyed working with figures and did several people's taxes for a number of years. She was also the bookkeeper for 40 years for the Condo Corporation where she lived. Barb had many other interests; she loved her bridge and played with her good friend Kathy for many years, enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas with her friend Donna and her time spent at Assiniboine Downs with friend Lorna. Barb really enjoyed getting together and keeping in touch with her old school friends for dinner every few months. Barb also belonged to the Jazzy Gems (Red Hat Group). Barb enjoyed her friends and was a good listener and always showed interest in friends and their families. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I’m sorry I was not around Grandma, but you were in my heart and thoughts everyday. I’ll always remember the days of cooking with my easy bake oven, watching curling and going for long walks. My favourite memory will always be you telling me that when I was little, I picked up my baby picture that was on the stand and saying “I just wanted to touch it a little bit.” Thank you for teaching me so many things in life, I will always hold you with me. I love you Grandma, always and forever. - Posted by: Brittany (Granddaughter ) on: Jan 11, 2018

  • Barb and I met around 1983 while working at the same TD branch on Tyndall Ave. I lived in Westwood too so everyday she would graciously pick me up, drop my daughter at my Mom’s and we would trundle off to work. We were as different as night and day but had many deep conversations on those trecs to work. At work we would banter back and forth with our sarcastic humour at times having those around us think we didn’t like each other which would just make us laugh. Her math skills superseded mine by like a 100%. We had some good laughs each month as we were in charge of balancing travellers Cheques and Securities ,of course she made it all balance always being a good sport. I remember a trip home down Sturgeon one night in a sea of fog, there I was with my head out the window telling her when she was getting too close to the ditch , a few tense moments but she got us home unscathed. Over the years our friendship was dinners out and a few bike rides around the neighbourhood often not seeing each other for good periods of time. We had one of those friendships that when we were together it was a blah blah blah , 4 hour catching up session often evoking go home glances from restaurant staff. After I moved out to Nova Scotia 9 years ago our conversations were less frequent. I usually called her on her birthday and this year a week or 10 days before her birthday I had an urge to call her early which I am so glad I did as it would be my last conversation with my old friend. Funny how the Universe conspires to move us to do something. It’s not goodbye Barb but rather I will see you on the other side. This time you can be the short blonde bombshell with zero math skills and I will be the tall thin drink of water with the skills of an accountant. Your friend of many years....Sandy - Posted by: Sandy Marcou (Friend) on: Jan 08, 2018

  • Sorry for your loss- our prays are with you in this sad time. - Posted by: Kim&Myles&Johnna (Friends of Ron) on: Jan 06, 2018

  • Barb and I became almost instant friends almost 40 yrs ago working together at the TD Bank, and have kept in touch through the years. We had a running joke about her starting work at the bank before I was even born, but that age difference had no bearing on our friendship. I loved her sense of humor, her compassion and willingness to listen, and the interest she always showed in your life. I was so sad to hear of her passing and my hearlfelt condolences go out to you Ron and your family. She will be missed by many! ❤️ - Posted by: Cathy (Gilbert) Therrien (Friend) on: Jan 06, 2018
