Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN GORDON DYCK March 14, 1935 - January 26, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of John Dyck, at home, on January 26, 2018, at the age of 82. John was the loving husband of Erika, father of Heather (Larry) and Cameron (Kelly), and grandpa to Kieran, Teagan and Madyn. He is also survived by his sister Irene, brother Donald (Gloria), sisters-in-law Gerda (Ed) and Loni, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents John and Tina, siblings Josie, Katie, Helen, Peter, and a brother in infancy. John grew up on a farm in Burwalde, near Winkler, Manitoba. He went to high school in Winkler and then attended Teacher's College in Winnipeg. He started his teaching career in Kronsgart, Manitoba in a one-room country school and then taught in Steinbach, North Kildonan and St. James-Assiniboia for a total of 35 years. During his early teaching years, he attended the University of Manitoba where he attained his BA and BEd degrees. John and Erika met in 1964 and married in 1966 at First Mennonite Church in Winnipeg. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. John loved the outdoors, gardening and camping with his family. They took many trips in their trailer to explore new places, and these trips often involved visiting family throughout Canada. Upon retirement, his love of gardening continued and he was known for the many flowers and tomatoes that he grew annually. John was an amazing baker. He loved the Christmas season and spent weeks filling the house with his wonderful goodies. Above all, John loved his family and he looked forward to seeing them all, especially his three grandchildren in Calgary and Winnipeg. He was a great sport with all three of them and spent many hours playing the games they directed. His interest in family extended to detailed work in researching his family genealogy, filling many albums with photos and family records. He always enjoyed meeting people and catching up with old friends. He will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held at First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Avenue, on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee.
