MARIA ALEIDA JACOBA CALVERLEY (nee WASSENAAR) May 18, 1947 - February 3, 2018 With family by her side, the Lord called Mary home in the early hours on Saturday, February 3, 2018. She is lovingly survived by her husband Ron, her three children: Philip (Jenny) Calverley, Patricia Simpson (Bill Kohinski) and Stephen Calverley; grandchildren Gavin and Katie Simpson, and Jaxon Calverley. She will also be lovingly remembered by her sister Tenie VandenAkker; brother Peter (Cindy) Wassenaar; brother-in-law Steve (Kathy) Calverley, and mother-in-law Erika Calverley. She also leaves behind her dearest friend Wilma Thiessen; along with so many nephews, nieces and friends. She was predeceased by her parents; sisters Froukje Wassenaar, Gerry Golhof, Liz Jongsma; and father-in-law Marshall Calverley. Mary was born in the Netherlands and moved to Winnipeg with her family at the age of five. Mary always had quite the spirit that lit up every room. She had a heart for everyone, but especially for God. After graduating from Bible College, she moved back to Winnipeg and became the director for Hope Centre. She loved teaching everyone about the Lord, and volunteered countless years teaching Sunday School, Bible Camps, and girl clubs, where she was always known as Miss Mary. She enjoyed volunteering for many different organizations and fundraisers in her neighbourhood; always giving a helping hand where she could. She loved her church family at Providence Reformed Church. Mary loved her children, and she also loved her foster children. In her later years Mary enjoyed being the leader for her TOPS group. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and her many dear friends. She truly had the most loving, caring heart to all that knew her. She will be greatly missed. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Donwood Manor for their absolutely wonderful, loving care given to Mary over these last few years. A memorial service will take place this Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., at Providence Reformed Church, located at 2615 Henderson Highway. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzhiemer Society of Manitoba.

  • Mary, as I knew her, along with her brother Peter and a host of other kids on the block, played together on Burrows Avenue in the 1950s. My sister Lorraine and I lived in the duplex next to the church at the end of the block, while the Wassenaar family lived nearer the middle of the block in their little white house, until the family moved to another Burrows residence a few blocks farther west, on the other side of McGregor. I did run into Mary as an adult, but that was some years ago, and I don't remember where we bumped into one another - like everyone else, probably at Eaton's downtown! However, we recognized and remembered each other and reminisced during that conversation. Some friends you never forget... I am so sad to know that she is no longer with us, and offer hope of happy memories for the family Mary leaves behind. My deepest condolences to the family of my childhood friend. - Posted by: Linda (Weremiuk) Henderson (childhood friend) on: Feb 07, 2018

  • To Ron and family, my deepest condolences. I had the pleasure of meeting Mary through WHRA, then at Donwood. She always had this inner light that you could see/sense even when verbal communication was limited. I loved the way she lit up when she saw Ron come into view and of course her hymn singing. she had the words ingrained knew every word and melody. Now she is safe in the arms of her heavenly father, even knowing that I know how difficult not having her physically here will be. I will keep you in my prayers. • I was one of Mary's TOPS members for a few years at the church on Watt Street. She was very dedicated and generous with her time and her heart. I always enjoyed my time with her. She loved to laugh at silly things and that kept everyone around her laughing, too. She loved music and shared a lot of her collection with me, which I appreciated a lot. My thoughts and condolences are with you and the family at this time. May lots of memories comfort you and keep Mary alive in your hearts. - Posted by: Liz (friend) on: Feb 07, 2018
