ALEXANDER JOHN GEORGE GELHORN It is with a broken heart that I announce that Alex, the love of my life and best friend, passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly at our home on Saturday, February 3, 2018. I, his loving wife of 45 years, Valerie, survive him and will cherish his memory forever. Alex is also survived by his brother, Bruce Gelhorn, and my siblings Linda Dale, Bill (Kathy) Brooks, Gary Brooks and Lorraine Bannon; his much loved nephews, great nephews, great niece, dear friends, his Aunt Marion Gerlach and many cousins. Alex was predeceased by his parents, Alex & Helen Gelhorn, his in-laws, Bill & Elva Brooks, his sister-in-law Valerie Brooks, his brother-in-law Ron Bannon, and his grandparents and many cousins. I was so very proud to call Alex my husband. He was a man who always had a strong opinion but was receptive to the other side. Hewas the most generous person I have ever known and not wanting any kind of recognition. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. People often marvelled at his determination and commitment in reaching any goal that he might set for himself. One of his most recent goals was to lose weight and to become stronger and fit. Of course he accomplished this! He was a hard worker in every aspect of his life; including his 34+ years at Canadian Pacific Railway. He savoured every minute of his time at our beloved lake home and we had enjoyed several fun trips to Cancun, Mexico in recent years. I take comfort in knowing that when Alex passed he was in his favourite place in the world and I was close by. I sincerely thank the Southeast Whiteshell Fire Department, the Falcon Lake EMS, and STARS Air Ambulance for all of their efforts. I am so very grateful for all of the love and support which I have received from our very dear friends, neighbours and family members. A private celebration of Alex's life will be held in the spring. I will always love you honey.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • Valerie, very sorry for your loss. I worked with Alex for over 30 years and spent many a day and night in the Brandon and Minnedosa bunkhouses with him and he was truly one of the better and more interesting "characters" at CPR. The time we all spent away from home (you know firsthand) went faster when Alex was around. - Posted by: David Boyko (Co-worker) on: Apr 16, 2018

  • Valerie We were so shocked to hear about Alex. Doug and I are so very sorry for your loss. You are in our thoughts and in our hearts. - Posted by: Doug and Kathy Sheppard (Friend ) on: Feb 14, 2018

  • Such sad news! Valerie, your words are a comfort indeed. I was a school boy friend of Alex's and through the "fog" of the many years passed, remember Alex as a wonderful, honest, hard working and fun friend. My sincere condolences as we lost one of the "good guys" far too soon... - Posted by: Doug Lang (Winnipeg, School Friend) on: Feb 12, 2018

  • Valerie, you have our deepest sympathies. I cannot begin to express the shock I felt when we heard of Alex’s passing. Every family has that ‘cool’ relative and for me that was Alex. I always wanted to play sports like Alex, make people laugh like Alex or have the respect of others that Alex had. I will be forever thankful to him. He will be forever missed but never forgotten. - Posted by: Don and Edith Gerlach (Cousin) on: Feb 11, 2018

  • Each time out families gathered and we saw the two of you together, the joy in your relationship was visible to all. Alex talked so often about how happy he was with his life. And it was so clear how deeply in love with you, Valerie, that Alex was. Alex had a wonderful, relaxed and positive sense of humour and was always the consummate gentleman with everyone in the family, young and old. We hope that the great love between you will be your strength in years to come. Our deepest condolences. - Posted by: Jackie and Jim Gerlach (Cousin and wife) on: Feb 11, 2018

  • I have said this many times and right now seems very fitting that I say this once again. Uncle Alex you are very much a part of who I am today. The man I became and the father that I am is very much due to the time that I spent with you as a child. It is with very fond memories that you will always be remembered. - Posted by: Daryl Ballentyne (Nephew) on: Feb 10, 2018
