• I first met you when you started dating my daughter Rachael about 5 years ago. You made a nice couple and can only wonder how things would have turned out if you stayed together. We broke bread at the dinner table and I enjoyed your company very much. There are a few occasions that will stay with me forever. One, was when you gave me a behind the scenes tour of the Journey to Churchill at the Assiniboine zoo as it neared completion. It was obvious you were very proud to be part of the construction of this world class exhibit for the city of Winnipeg. Another is we both shared a strong passion for fishing and I will treasure the times I got to go fishing with you on your boat. You seemed at ease and in your place whenever we went looking for that elusive trophy fish. Our troubles and worries seemed to disappear. Last year you offered to sell me your boat as you knew how much I liked it. I cannot thank you enough Derek for that and you will always be with me and my family whenever we take it out trying to catch that big one. We will miss you dearly. • To Derek's family and friends....we send our sincere sympathy with your loss of Derek! Our hearts go out to all of you. For the short time we knew him, we can attest to his love of the outdoors where we could smell his barbecue on many evenings and here the crackle of his fire pit. Every fall Derek shared his fruit off his fruit trees so they wouldn't go to waste. May memories help you keep him close! • We wish the family (Mrs. Stoyko, Dennis, and Richelle) and friends deepest sympathy and condolences at this time of sorrow. Derek was my best friend! I have known Derek for over 30+ years. We grew up together, went to school together, in air cadets, delivered flyers as young teens, partying, fishing, camping, hunting and target shooting. Derek enjoyed going to rodeos and fireworks shows with me. We had a lot of fun together over many years. Derek served in the Canadian armed forces, he also worked as an electrician for many years before becoming a seasoned Project manager in the electrical trade, he moved on to project estimator down the road and enjoyed his job very much. He was very proud of his work and skills as an electrician, estimator and project manager over the years. He loved his country music, he loved his BBQ and BBQ outdoors be it in the middle of winter in the bush surrounded by friends and family or be it at his home in Warren on the deck. If you want to know about Derek come ask me about him and I will tell you my story of what a great guy he was and what a great friend he was. I didn’t just loose a best friend I lost my life long best friend, he was like family to me.
