VISSARION SKLAVENITIS March 16, 1933 - February 26, 2018 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Vissarion Sklavenitis. Vissarion passed away in Winnipeg, on Monday, February 26, 2018, at the age of 84. He leaves to mourn his passing sons, Dimitrios (Karen) and Nodas (Helen); grandchildren, Katherine, Michael, Niko and Arianna; brother Andreas, and many cherished nephews, nieces, and relatives in Canada and Greece. He was predeceased by his wife Ekaterini in 2003, and most recently his daughter Evangelia in 2015. In his youth, Dad worked on oil tankers as a sailor for 15 years and travelled extensively throughout the globe. Life at sea required him to spend considerable amounts of time away from his family. Ultimately, he chose to join his brother in Canada in 1970, and immigrated with his wife and children to adopt a life that would afford him more time with those he loved. While living in Winnipeg, Vissarion worked as a painter at Pallas, Minerva, and Armatas painting companies until his retirement. He was deeply devoted to his church, and spent countless hours chanting at services. Upon retirement, he travelled as often as possible to his ancestral village of Vathi, Greece, on the island of Meganisi. Vissarion Sklavenitis was a kind and generous man whose greatest happiness stemmed from the time he spent with his family. He was always ready to give without ever expecting anything in return, and his gentle demeanor will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank all the staff at Charleswood Care Centre for the love and attention they extended to our father over the past three years. Funeral services were held on Friday, March 2 at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Avenue, with Rev. Fr. Konstantinos Tsiolas officiating. Interment followed at Waverley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. www.voyagefuneralhomes.com
