I was in Grade 5 when Mr. Zahirney was absent due to a Kidney being transplanted. I had NO idea that it was his daughter that HE was donating a kidney TO. Talk about the ultimate gift. What a beautiful thing to do for your child. I remember my friend Jim Slipec and I decided we would find out where Mr. Zahirney lived and go and wish him well. So using our Grade 5 sleuthing skills, we found out that he lived in East Kildonan. After school one day, we hopped on our bikes and made the trek from the North End to EK to wish him well. Needless to say, he was surprised to see a couple of 10 year olds had hunted him down to say "Get better soon Mr. Z." For us, we were both glad to see he'd survived the ordeal and was on the mend. And that our favorite teacher was going to be back soon. A great teacher, and a great inspiration. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Lucas Kandia (Student) on: Jul 20, 2021

He was my grade 5 teacher at Norquay. Firm but fair. He set a high expectation which motivated us to work hard and always exceed his expectations! I remember his big rubber stamps and how I loved seeing the big A on my spelling tests! Or better yet that A+. I also remember his suit! He seemed to wear the same one every day, but it turned out he owned more than one of the same suit! Loved my time in his class! - Posted by: Naomi Swan-Lake (Former student) on: Mar 03, 2018
