EILEEN RUTH MAINLAND It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eileen Ruth Mainland on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, three months short of her 105th year. Eileen will lovingly be remembered by her son, Allister (Wendy), granddaughters Tara and Sheena (Chad) Roscoe, with countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Eileen was predeceased by her husband Archie, parents Thomas and Elizabeth Prowse, and siblings, Woodley, Isabelle Lamb and Margaret Neylan. Eileen was born in Brandon Hills, Manitoba and raised on the family homestead farm. Mom became a teacher, beginning her career in the "one room" schoolhouse at Northfield. She followed in the paths of "time changing" educators such as Nellie McClung. In her early 30s, Eileen, the adventurer, travelled on an exchange teacher program to South Africa (a daunting trip for a woman in those times). In 1952, Eileen married the love of her life Archie. They spent 44 wonderful years together raising their only son. They were blessed with two precious granddaughters, Tara (1980) and Sheena (1982). Eileen and Archie both spent their retirement years enjoying, nurturing and loving them. Mom (always the teacher) was caring, compassionate and a loving person who extended her heart and fellowship to all she met. The church and her faith were a huge part of her being. She attended St. Cuthbert's Anglican Church from 1952 to 1973 and then St. Saviours Anglican Church. Never afraid of a challenge, Mom always approached life with vibrancy and dignity. Eileen loved flowers and her gardens, which she tended to each and every day while in her home. She also loved to bake. One of her specialties, were butter tarts. Those of you who had the pleasure of tasting them would agree that they were one of a kind. If you happened to get a care package sent with you, they very seldom made it home, as they would have been consumed on the drive. The family would like to extend their appreciation to all the home care staff 3rd Floor Beacon Hill, and to St. Boniface Hospital 5B for their kindness and compassionate care. A service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, March 10 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Saviours Anglican Church, 690 Munroe at Grey Street. Reception is to follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, in Eileen's memory, always hug a loved one, and if you wish, make a donation to the Alzheimer Society or the charity of your choice. When I Must Leave You When I must leave you for a little while, Please do not grieve and shed wild tears, And hug your sorrow to you through the years. But start out bravely with a gallant smile. And for my sake and in my name live on And do all things the same. Feed not your loneliness on empty days, But fill each waking hour in useful ways. Reach out your hand in comfort and cheer And I in turn will comfort you And hold you near. And never ever be afraid to die For I am waiting for you in the sky! www.voyagefuneralhomes.com
