MAYA (MAINA) KIRICHENKO With profound sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Mama, Babunia and Great Babunia, Maya Kirichenko on March 27, 2018 at the age of 91. Maya was born on October 25, 1926 in the city of Sloviansk, Donetsk oblast, Ukraine to Mykhailo and Efrosinia (Shatrova) Solomenko and was sister to Nadia and Tamara. Maya was an extraordinary woman with a strong, courageous spirit and a gentle, loving heart. She was modest, humble and always put the needs of others before her own. Maya overcame many struggles during her lifetime, including war, surviving the Ukrainian Holodomor-famine 1932 to 1933, being separated from her family at the tender age of 15 when she was taken as a slave labourer to work in a German war factory. Together with her husband Volodymyr and young son she immigrated to Canada in 1950. Along with a strong faith in God, she persevered with hard work and determination to provide a good life for her family. She was a long-time volunteer at her church. Flowers bloomed under Maya's green thumb and flower seeds from her garden were often shared. Maya had a great sense of humour, she laughed often and always had a story to share. The true joy of Maya's life was her family. We will always cherish her tenderness and great love for us. Maya was predeceased by her husband, Volodymyr. Left to treasure her memory are son Eugene (Karen), daughters Nadia (Andrew) and Zina (Don), grandchildren, Maryna, Adam (Chris), Tymon (Ashley), Chris, Christine, Michael, and great-grandchildren Oksana, Kayda, Quinn, Joshua, Matthew, Seanna and Brooke. She is also survived by family in Ukraine. Heartfelt thanks to Doctors T and A Babick, Holy Family Home, St. Mary's Unit staff for lovingly caring for Maya. Panakhyda will be sung Tuesday, April 3, 7:00 p.m., Funeral Liturgy will take place Wednesday, April 4, 11:00 a.m. both at St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 820 Burrows Ave. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations in Maya's memory can be made to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress - Holodomor Fund, 777 Pritchard Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2W 0E8 or Renovation Fund, St. Mary the Protectress Cathedral, 820 Burrows Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2X 0R2. • Maya was very special to me. She was always able to smile through the physical pain, especially when her family came to visit. Many times, she was able to convey a true sense of humor, which brought laughter to residents and staff. I will always think of Maya, when I'm enjoying the movie, " The sound of Music ". To Maya's family, I offer my deepest and sincerest condolences. God Bless You. - Posted by: Tina Gawron (Eve. Nurse St. Mary's Unit) on: Apr 04, 2018

  • Our deepest sympathies for your family's loss. Hopefully the memories of your mother and grandmother will help you get through this difficult time. • Mickey and I (and my late Mom) always enjoyed chatting "over the fence" with Maya and hearing her incredible stories. We will remember her soft spoken voice and her tremendous kindness. She was an absolute delight and we think of her so often. Our condolences to you - Eugene, Nadia and Zina. You will have wonderful memories of your Mother - as do we.
