KEITH WOOD February 2, 1944 - May 1, 2018 It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Keith Wood on May 1, 2018. Keith died peacefully, with his family by his side, due to complications from a stroke on April 25. Keith leaves to cherish his memory Marjorie Wood, daughter Shira (Graeme), son Eric (Danica), grandchildren, Connor and Ashlinn Collison and Thelonious Wood, sister Anne Brown (Frank) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Eric Wood, stepfather Creighton Walters and mother Elizabeth Walters. Keith was born in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia and spent his early years in Dartmouth and Halifax. He was a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where he was the recipient of the Donald C. McKay Award and subsequently a sessional instructor. Keith made Winnipeg his home in the late 1960s. He worked as a graphic artist and founded an advertising agency before pursuing his true passion and calling as a visual artist. For Keith life was art and art was life. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, May 13 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at his studio at 80 Lombard - 4th Floor. In lieu of flowers, it would please Keith to have donations made to Artbeat Studio. KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 907 MAIN STREET www.korbanchapel.com

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • I am saddened to hear of Keith's passing. He shared his knowledge and skills in art generously and kindly. He inspired fellow artists to be better. His art is stunningly beautiful and is his legacy. I will miss his guidance. - Posted by: Genevie Henderson (Artist and Colleague) on: May 18, 2018

  • I had a studio space at 138 Portage Street East before we artists on the 7th floor were unceremoniously booted out. We were also both members of Site Gallery. I would often stop by to visit Keith and see his latest works. I was privileged to hear stories of his youth in Nova Scotia and memories of his mother and other family members. He was very funny and passionate and irreverent and usually right on in his deductions on various issues that affect artists. He also spoke glowingly about his family and listened when I was dealing with some difficult issues. When I asked for a cup of water he would pour me a ceramic mug of red wine. (the water from the tap on our floor for some reason wasn't drinkable). I could say Keith was one of a kind and will be sorely missed. - Posted by: Ann Smith (friend) on: May 11, 2018

  • I met Keith this last winter while he was facilitating a 4 part encaustic workshop at Studio Central He could see my enthusiasm for this medium and after learning all I could for him in all 4 workshops he gifted me with a large chunk of beeswax to get me started on my own projects and offered to continue mentoringme when I returned to Winnipeg at the end of this summer. I was honoured and moved not only by his gift, but by this offering of friendship by this generous man who had given of his time and his passion to inspire and teach us. My condolences to his family and his many friends. The encaustic piece that he helped me create this past winter I dedicate to his memory. - Posted by: Will (student, friend) on: May 10, 2018

  • My deepest condolences to Marj, Shira, Eric and all of Keith's family. Keith was a good pal to my dear husband Bruce Barr. Bruce admired Keith's work, and they loved to discuss art and artistic creativity whether it be painting or photography, sometimes long into the night I understand. A sad and very difficult time for you all, but try to treasure the positive impact of Keith's life. In sympathy, Valerie Gilroy - Posted by: Valerie Gilroy (Friend) on: May 08, 2018

  • Man, Keith was one cool cat. I will miss our discussions regarding line, space, spaces within spaces, and the poetry of Layton and Coltrane. He gave me the gift of seeing beyond the obvious.... - Posted by: Rosey G. (friend) on: May 08, 2018

  • I've lost my buddy. We had so much more to talk about. I'll sorely miss him. - Posted by: Rod Sasaki (Friend) on: May 07, 2018

  • I’d like to send Shira and get extended family my heartfelt wishes in the passing of her beloved father. As a daughter myself, I know how important the role a “ father” plays in ones lifetime. It leaves a huge void to lose someone you love. But I’m confident that through his artwork and never ending creative spirit, , Shira’z dad lives on in the lives of all whom he touched. May his soul Rest In Peace ! Harriet Berkal - Posted by: Harriet Berkal (Friend of his daughter Shira ) on: May 05, 2018

  • You always had a smile on your face and stories to tell. I admired, and was inspired by your art, which you were so humble and modest about. I will miss you a bunch. Rest in peace Keith (hugs). To the family, may all the good memories and laughs get you through this difficult time. Please know he always spoke so proudly and highly of all of you. - Posted by: Autumn (Friend) on: May 05, 2018
