C. P. GOPALKRISHNA August 16, 1930 - April 25, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cheppudira Gopalkrishna. He leaves to mourn his wife Marianne, daughter Nicola, son-in-law David Coady, sister-in-law Karola Ullrich in Germany, brother-in-law Manfred Hoefs and family in Whitehorse, cousins in India and many friends in Winnipeg, USA, Europe, New Zealand and India. Gopal has been living in Winnipeg since 1962. He was born in India. After high school, he first studied medicine but switched to agriculture after his older brother Raja Ram died, to run the family coffee plantation. Gopal disliked injustices and whenever he could, he helped his working men to a better standard of living. After he successfully ran the plantation for eight years, his father retired from the army and took over. So, Gopal turned his back on a life of coffee planting and security for a life of curiosity, travel and adventure. Having started by hitchhiking through Europe in the early 1950s and spending six months in the US as an exchange student, he chose to trade in his agriculture degree for one in teaching. He taught in Oakbank and Transcona for almost 30 years. He discovered a passion for teaching, was popular with students and staff and taught students to be confident and self-reliant. His passion in life was cooking, reading and travelling. He changed an old van into a camper and every summer he travelled with his family all through Canada, USA and Mexico. After choosing an early retirement, when teaching standards were lowered and it was no longer fun, he enjoyed himself tinkering around with everything from cooking, carpentry, car repairs and gardening. He enjoyed the intellectual and loving companionship with Marianne for more than 40 years, travelling all over North America, Mexico, Asia, Europe, Egypt and visiting Nicola in South Africa was the highlight. He really enjoyed himself at Nicola and David's wedding in Cuba and spending Christmas with them in Trinidad and Tobago. He kept fit practicing yoga and walking to the local library every day. He died hoping his friends would remember him with a smile and a libation. A celebration of Gopal's life will be held at the Parish Hall of St. Paul's Anglican Church, 830 North Drive, Fort Garry on Saturday, June 23 at 3:00 p.m. If people desire, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society. www.voyagefuneralhomes.com

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I was saddened to hear of Gopie's passing but thankful that I was able to talk with him on the phone earlier on in 2018. He was such a wonderful man and teacher and we all have such great memories of him from the occasional food fight he started at lunch to attending volleyball games resplendent in a sombrero and serape. He was known to beat the drum during volleyball games when he was displeased with my lack of consistency (Kennedy man! Keep a steady beat!). Gopie was well loved and respected and he made the world a better place. We were fortunate to have him in our lives. - Posted by: Craig Kennedy (Student) on: Jun 01, 2021

  • Gopi was one of a kind. I am grateful for him in many ways, he helped shape part of my character. I remember how he viewed the importance of fun while learning; the fishing trip he took our class on was a field trip that instilled trust, nature and togetherness. He was cared enough to offer his students $20 for quitting smoking; I was one of those students that took him up on that offer and I did quit. The slides shows he shared about his travels were inspiring. The life that he had was one of adventure, knowledge and teaching...Thank you Gopi, you made a difference. - Posted by: Sharon Vickner (Past student) on: May 09, 2020

  • Dear Marianne, I just learned now of Gopal's passing. I am so sorry. Gopal was such a vibrant man. From first meeting him I felt he was a friend, and I loved how he challenged me to think! He will be missed. Wanda - Posted by: Wanda Sparkes (Friend) on: Nov 02, 2018

  • So sorry to hear that Gopal has passed away. He was a great teacher-I wanted to study biology because of him, but switched to chemistry because university biology was boring compared to the way that Gopal taught. He made a huge difference at SCI as an inspiring and gifted teacher. - Posted by: Hilary Jenkins (Former student) on: May 13, 2018

  • I will always be grateful to Gopi for teaching me how to defend my views in a discussion. He was such a dedicated, wonderful teacher. Rest in peace Gopi. - Posted by: Faith Haack (Former student) on: May 12, 2018

  • So many ways to describe Gopal - passionate, full of curiosity, constantly learning, generous, multi-talented, welcoming, full of stories. To be greeting with, "what are you reading?" each time we came to visit, and to talk for hours, or eat, or drink, or all three... before the winter fire or in the summer, under the grape arbor. We miss you and will raise a toast to you this summer with Marianne, under the arbor, admiring the garden. Thank you for your many years of friendship. - Posted by: Allison & Mike (long-time friends) on: May 12, 2018
