GEORGE JACOB KLASSEN George Jacob Klassen of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away on Monday, June 25, 2018 at the St. Boniface Hospital from a short but tough battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Betty; three children (goobers), Nikita, Christopher and Jonathan; siblings, Irmgard (George), Otto, Anne Marie (Frank) and Charlotte (Rick); mother-in-law Lydia Dyck and her children, Ruth (Rick), Linda (Lyle), Elsie (Stan), Evelyn (Joe), Johnny (Leacia) and Rosalie (Dave); many cousins, nieces, nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Otto and Kaethe Klassen, father-in-law Walter Dyck, and sister-in-law Marlies. George was born in Winnipeg on August 31, 1957. He married his wife Betty Ann Dyck, the love of his life and partner of 32 years, on August 2, 1986. George worked the majority of his career as a project manager for Penn-Co Construction in Calgary, Alberta and later in the Manitoba offices. George had a passion for gardening and spent countless hours designing his backyard including a firepit, gazebo, and pergola. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them, sitting at the cottage at Falcon Lake, sharing the latest theory he had, and retelling the last historical book he finished reading. George enjoyed boat rides in the summer (always going just a bit too fast), making campfires at the lake (always making them a bit too big), and in the winter, going cross country skiing with his Betty Ann. According to his wishes, a celebration of his life has taken place at Douglas Mennonite Church, 1517 Rothesay Street, Winnipeg on Friday, June 29, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. Donations in memory of George may be made to Mennonite Economic Development Agency (www.meda.org). A special thank you to the staff in the GH3 ward of the Health Sciences Centre and everyone at the St. Boniface palliative care ward for their compassionate care of George and his family. Also, the family would like to thank Friends Funeral Service for their assistance.

  • Our condolences to Betty Anne and the children. Enjoyed many years of work together with George here in Calgary. One of our greatest memories is of George & Betty Anne dancing together after a co-workers wedding. They truly made a lovely couple and enjoyed life to the fullest. Praying for strength, comfort, hope, and peace. - Posted by: Harold & Sandra Friesen (Co-worker) on: Jun 29, 2018

  • So sorry for your loss, Betty and kids. George was such a great neighbour and always interesting to talk to! I remember how lovingly he spoke of Betty (after so many years together, I found that inspiring!), and how proud he was of his kids and his amazing handiwork! He will continue to be present in your lives... God Bless... - Posted by: Darryl & Chantal Lancaster (Neighbours) on: Jun 27, 2018

  • You have all been missed since the day you left the neighbourhood, but never more than now. George and Betty created such a beautiful family and his absence must be unbearable. We are so sorry for your loss. George was an ever present and a reliable figure in the cul de sac, and, in the life of our family. His theories were certainly enjoyed and we were happy he shared them with us. God bless you all. We are thinking of you and praying for your comfort today and in the days ahead. - Posted by: Diane and Mac Parken (Neighbours and Friends) on: Jun 27, 2018

  • So sorry to hear of this great loss. Had the honor of working with George on a very challenging project. His attention to detail and forthrightness really did a lot to bring the project to completion. Without him, this project may still be on the go and we have a lot to be thankful for...thanks George. A great loss to George's family and the industry, condolences to the family. - Posted by: Greg Popoff (Project Co-worker) on: Jun 27, 2018
