ANDREW (ANDY) BARABASH March 9, 1921 August 2, 2018 Peacefully at Holy Family Home, with his family by his side, our dear father, Didi and Great-Didi, passed away at the age of 97. Andrew was born on March 9, 1921 in selo Kut-Tovste, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. On December 31, 1933, he, along with his mother Anna, landed in Halifax Harbour to join his father Nicholas. They settled in Winnipeg where he attended King Edward, Aberdeen and St. John's schools. In 1939, he moved with his parents to the family farm in Fort Whyte, MB. In 1936, he met Nettie Kowalyk and they married on September 4, 1944 in St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church. Together they raised their four daughters. He started his career with Canada Messenger and in 1951 became an owner/operator of a Veterans Nash Taxi, which later became Duffy's Taxi, cab number 270, retiring in 1975. Dad was very proud of his Ukrainian heritage and thankful and equally proud to be a Canadian. For many years, Dad volunteered in the Ukrainian Catholic Church and supported Ukrainian communities and organizations. He was very active and in financial and on-going operations of the St. Andrew's Church. Dad was a proud member of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada, where he held positions at the Branch and Archeparchial levels. In 1998, Dad was vested with Knighthood in the Order of St. Volodymyr, patron Saint of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada, by His Grace Metropolitan Michael Bzedel. Dad is survived by: his daughters, Jane (Raymond), Lillian (Raymond), Judy, Marian (Peter); his grandchildren, Christine (Garry), Paul, Jeremy (Alyson), Patricia (Rene), Kristopher (Christine), Garrett (Stephanie), Erika (Jeff) and Kaitlyn; his 14 great-grandchildren and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Peter and Jan, Alfred and Shirley. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews in Ukraine, Poland, U.S.A. and Canada. Dad was predeceased by his wife Nettie; son-in-law Allan; parents, Nicholas and Anna; parents-in-law, Samuel and Anne; brothers, Teodor and Yosyf; and sister Stephania. The family would like to thank Dr. Taras Babick and Dr. Andrea Babick for their compassion and care. We would also like to extend a special thank you to the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate and all the staff of Holy Family Home. Your caring and compassion over the years are greatly appreciated. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by Fr. Len Ratushniak, CSsR on Thursday, August 9, 2018, 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrews Ukrainian Catholic Church, 160 Euclid Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.
