WOLODIMIR (WALLY) STACKIW
Born: Sep 23, 1928
Date of Passing: Aug 11, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWOLODIMIR (WALLY) STACKIW September 23, 1928 - August 11, 2018 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Wally Stackiw. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Olga, his son David (Rosanne), granddaughter Daniella, grandson Joshua; sister Shirley (Jack) O'Neil; nephew John (Melodee) with daughters, Lacee and Larissa O'Neil; nieces, Liz (Glenn) Lawryk and Laureen O'Neil; uncle Morris Lobas, and cousin Roman (Leslie) Lobas. He was predeceased by his father Matthew (1966), mother Stephanie (1990), and sister Olga (2014). Wally was born in Winnipeg's North End. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in Microbiology and spent most of his career at Cadham Provincial Lab. He had an infectious sense of humour (no pun intended) and loved spending time with his family, friends and in the great outdoors, especially fishing at George Lake. Wally and his wife Olga were inseparable and cherished every moment spent together. Special thanks to everyone that cared for, supported, and visited Wally and Olga these past three months. A private service and burial have already taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. "My beloved Wally, my soulmate, the love of my life, I will miss you"

Wally was an impressive and knowledgeable figure at Cadham Provincial Lab for many years. He contributed to the training of many staff members in the lab and at the University of Manitoba, from technologists to PhDs. He had a wonderful sense of humor and humility. Wally has gone but his contribution to science will remain forever. - Posted by: Richard Drummond (My mentor and friend at Cadham Provincial Lab) on: Feb 06, 2019

I had the privilege of interacting with Wally decades ago when he was a scientist at the Cadham Provincial Lab. Wally isolated viruses from mosquitoes and, if they weren't western equine encephalitis virus isolates, they were sent to my federal lab for identification. By that process, we identified a new virus. We considered naming it Stackiw virus after Wally but were told that viruses are not normally named after people, so we named it Manitoba Virus. We published on it in 1991 with Wally as a co-author to the paper. I mention this to show just how much respect we had for Wally. My condolences to the family. Wally was a fine man. - Posted by: Harvey Artsob (Former colleague) on: Aug 23, 2018

We did not know your father personally but he, along with your mother, raised a wonderful son, with strong ethics and solid values. It is a testament to your father's own qualities. Our sincere condolences. - Posted by: Dave & Suzanne Kennelly (Patients of David) on: Aug 18, 2018
