DORIS HILL Doris Rosalie May Hill (nee Bratton) passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre on August 26, 2018, with her loving family by her side. She was predeceased by Bruce, her husband of 55 years, their infant daughter Judy, son Bill, her parents, George and Elizabeth Bratton, sisters, Nelly, Elsie and Pat, and brothers, George and Fred. She is survived by daughter Marian (Gary), and sons, Bruce (Bonnie), Jim (Eleanor) and Rick (Marlene), as well as son-in-law Doug Cade, daughter-in-law Valerie Hill, and brother Eric Bratton. Also mourning her loss are 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Doris was born in Bromley, Kent, England on February 28, 1924. It was while serving in the British Royal Army during the Second World War that she met Bruce Hill, a Canadian soldier stationed in England. Doris and Bruce were married October 16, 1943 and celebrated the birth of their daughter Marian the following July. After the end of the Second World War, Doris and Marian crossed the Atlantic by ship along with many other war brides to start a new life in Canada. Landing in Halifax, Nova Scotia and not knowing a soul, she and her young child took a train to Winnipeg, Manitoba to join her husband and meet his family. While life was difficult in those early years, Doris always showed unwavering support and love toward her family. Mom had a knack for making others laugh, and she seemed to particularly enjoy laughing at herself. Visits and phone conversations with her, even in the last weeks of her life, were a joy. Her sharp wit, grasp of current events, and genuine interest in the lives of those around her always made being with her a pleasure. She made friends easily and had an ability to connect with people. She had many long term friendships and continued to make new friends even in her later years. She had a strong connection and genuine friendship with each of her children. We all loved her company, both at home and in faraway places. We will miss her and will continue to cherish the memories of laughter and love. The family wishes to thank the caring and thoughtful staff on the D1 unit at Riverview Health Centre. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
