JULIA MASLANYK (nee BALUTA) Julia Maslanyk passed away peacefully, at Seven Oaks Hospital, on December 30, 2018 at the age of 93, with her family at her side. She was predeceased by her husband Alexander, father Wasyl, mother Paraskevia, and grandmother Maria Gulinowska. She leaves to cherish her memory and to mourn her, brothers: Leo (Oksana) and John (Martha), son Bohdan (Ruth), daughter Maria (Ihor), daughter Halia (Denis), son John (Angela), and grandchildren, Kris (Giselle), Tami (Mike), Tyrsa (Taras), Areta (Stephan), Alexander, Cassandra (Justin), Marysa (Adam), Jean Paul, Jessie (Caitlain), Ariana (Taylor), and many great-grandchildren. Julia was born in Brody, Ukraine March 29 1925. She met her husband Alexander Maslanyk in Germany during the war years and they were married in Augsburg November 1946. A year later in 1947 their son Bohdan was born. After the war, they boarded a ship called the New Hellas in Genoa, Italy and came to Canada. After a short stay in Gilbert Plains, they settled in Winnipeg. A short time later Dad got a job as a chemist for Sherritt Gordon Mines in Ottawa where their second child, Maria, was born. Dad was transferred to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta in 1954 where they moved into their newly built home. Julia loved her role as wife and mother. During the next 17 years Julia continued her life in Fort Saskatchewan where her daughter Helen and her son John were born. Julia's life changed dramatically when her husband of 24 years passed away suddenly in 1969. She wanted to be close to her mother, father and brothers and moved to Winnipeg so that she could have the support of her family. She worked at UVAN and then Progress/Vera Credit Union until her retirement in 1990. Her greatest joy was spending time celebrating and travelling with family. She was a very spiritual person and strongly believed in the power of prayer. She attended St. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral and was active in the Women's League at Prosvita. She kept close ties with friends and family in Ukraine, Canada and the United States. We will miss her great sense of humour but most of all her sound advice on family matters. We love you Mama with all our hearts. Keep us close. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Dalling and the nursing staff on the 5th floor Unit 3 for the respectful and kind care that our mother received. Panahyda will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019 and Divine Liturgy celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 4 at Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Vladimir and Olga, 115 McGregor Street. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery. VICHNAYA PAMYAT

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • They lived across the street from us many years ago on Leila. My best memory that is cemented in my soul is of her and her daughter Helen playing piano and both singing a beautiful Ukraine ballad. They were good neighbors and friends as we were growing up in the 1970s in Winnipeg. Daniel Watson - Posted by: Daniel Watson (Neighbor) on: Jan 08, 2019

  • Our deepest condolences to the Maslanyk and Baluta families upon the passing of Teta Julia. Teta Julia was my aunt, and, growing up in Winnipeg, I have many fond memories of her from all the many family get-togethers that we have had over the years. Many of these memories involve food - great food. And especially deserts - amazing desserts. Another memory I have, as a child, is of being in awe at the family resemblance between Julia and my Dad, Leo (Julia's brother). But of course the standout memory for me is her smile and her incredible sense of humor. I think there must be something genetic about that humor and quick wit, as I know Julia's brothers (my Dad and uncle John), her children and even grandchildren all seem to have inherited it. It's the uncanny ability to smile and make other people smile that really stands out most. Thanks for all the sweet memories and many smiles Teta Julia - you will be missed. -Danylo, Renée, Sofia and Elsa Baluta - Posted by: Daniel & Renée Baluta (Nephew) on: Jan 04, 2019
