ANTONI (TONY) ROBAK Antoni (Tony) Robak died holding the hands of his family in the late evening of January 13, 2019 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His death concludes both a life well-lived and a brave, nearly two-year long battle with lung cancer. Tony is survived by his wife, Janina, and his kids, Chris, Matt (Courtney) and Nicole. He is also survived by his mother, Stanislawa, and his siblings, Maria, Marek (Grazyna), Joanna and Wiesiek (Ula). He is further survived by numerous nieces, cousins and family friends in both Poland and Canada. He is predeceased by his father, Kazimierz. Tony was born on December 22, 1960 in Leki Gorne, Poland. There he met the love of his life, Janina. When Janina immigrated to Winnipeg in 1984, Tony took the only rational course of action: he broke away from a pilgrimage group after he visited the pope, escaped to an Italian refugee camp and followed Janina to Canada. There they received the love and support of sister-in-law Kazimiera (Barrie) in starting their new life together. Tony's gamble to follow Janina paid off, because it created a loving family that is inspired by his spirit and whose members all share in his sense of duty to family and friends. Tony had a strong sense of curiosity and was an intuitive problem solver. He was an accomplished millwright technician. In his spare time, he often kept busy tinkering with salvaged items while listening to old-school country and classic rock. He shared his hobbies with his family: fishing, shooting an old shotgun in a quarry, and strategic $20 investments in slot machines (machine volume cranked to maximum). Tony was a devout Roman Catholic, and his faith gave him the comfort, strength and hope that he needed to take his fight with cancer down to his very last breaths. Tony himself was a source of strength, comfort and inspiration to his friends and family. He is, and will always be, dearly missed. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 18 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Ghost Parish, 341 Selkirk Avenue. Rosary will be said prior at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Eulogy. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in his name to CancerCare Manitoba or the Health Sciences Centre.

  • Janina, I knew Tony through my ex-husband's work at Dimatec. He hired Tony & always said he was a good worker & a great man. You gave me a beautiful cut glass candy dish from Poland which I still have to this day. So kind, gentle & caring, that's what I remember about him, as well as his good-natured joking. I'm sorry I missed his obituary earlier this year or else I would have given you my condolences then.
