WILLIAM ALEXANDER ROBERTSON MCLACHLAN May 9, 1951 - January 11, 2019 It is with broken hearts that the family of William McLachlan announces his passing after a lengthy and heroic battle with cancer, at St. Boniface Hospital, on Friday, January 11, at 11:00 a.m. Bill leaves to mourn his wife and best friend of 43 years, Cathleen; daughter Meghann; son Matthew; granddaughters, Desirae and Kinley; and grandsons, Shayden and Kaidence. He also leaves behind his dear Auntie Margaret McClurg; and cousins, Alex, Allison, Nick, Julie, Janice, Sandra, Sheldon, Britt and Arianna. He was predeceased by both parents and cousin Karen. William also leaves to mourn his dear Aunt Jan and Stewart McKinley, as well as all of his many cousins in Scotland. Bill had the opportunity to emigrate from his home in Hamilton, Scotland to Canada, where he attained a degree as an Industrial Arts teacher. Bill was later offered a position with the Manitoba Youth Centre, where he worked for close to 35 years, in various departments within Corrections. Bill became active in the MGEU through the Youth Centre and served an active role as local President. He travelled to all correctional facilities within the province to ensue needs and mandates were followed through. Upon his retirement, Bill became active at the Elmwood Legion and sat on the Executive for many years until he finally decided to run for President. Bill was the President at the Elmwood Legion for six consecutive years. Bill loved the Legion and the many members who he spent countless hours laughing with and loving the company. He watched out for those who needed help and whatever he could do, he did. He strove for equality, fairness and had the ability to right the wrongs where he saw them. Bill was compassionate, giving, loving, caring and strong. Bill's loud Scottish brogue was often heard at various meetings and family get-togethers when he felt sanity or laughter was required, He was totally dedicated to his family. You lit up our Lives. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Elmwood Legion, 920 Nairn Avenue, Monday, January 21 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 pm www.voyagefuneralhomes.com

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Dear Cathleen, Meghann, Matthew and families…we wish to send you our heartfelt condolences. Bill and I met in college and would eventually develop a genuine kinship as we worked together at the Manitoba Youth Centre. Bill’s sense of humour helped guide us through thick and thin. I recall a particularly interesting ice breaker at family party that I attended wherein Bill announced with great enthusiasm: “Tell a story, sing a song; do a dance OR take down your pants!” His generosities seemed to have no limits. He was a true gentleman and a very good man. We are thinking of you and your families… Jeff Lehman and Lorene Legaree, Atikokan ON. - Posted by: Jeff Lehman (Friend) on: Mar 20, 2020

We worked with him for many years and have always admired his commitment to his work, his colleagues and his friends. He truly was a gentleman who embodied the qualities of fairness, compassion and integrity. He often spoke of his family and how much they meant to him. I also loved his sense of humour and can actually hear his laugh when I think of him. Deepest sympathies, Jim and Marilyn Ross. - Posted by: Jim Ross (Co-worker) on: Jan 19, 2019
