ROSE BILAN It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Rose Bilan passed away in Winnipeg on January 16, 2019. She died peacefully surrounded by her entire immediate family. She will be profoundly missed by her daughter Noel and son Bob and by her three granddaughters, Andrea (Wes), Heidi (Dave) and Anna (Maurice). Her loss is also mourned by her many friends and other family members, including her six great-grandchildren. Rose's passing was preceded by that of her parents, George and Dora Marian; her partner of thirty-five years, Lou Kalata; her sisters, Anne and Mary and her brothers, John and Steve. Rose was born in Winnipeg on March 24, 1921 and lived her entire life in the city that she loved. She graduated from St. John's High School and after having various jobs including running a restaurant - she went to work at Air Canada and remained there for 29 years. Working at Air Canada gave Rose the opportunity to travel the world and she took full advantage of the opportunity. Retiring at age sixty, she got to enjoy a long and full retired life. Rose was a loving mother, grandmother and aunt and valued nothing more than time spent with family and friends. Social to her core, Rose continued to make new friends throughout her life. All who knew her were taken by her generosity and lifted up by her constant support. As well as her love for travel, Rose enjoyed cooking - her perogies were legendary - reading, sewing and knitting. And, oh yes, the slot machines. Her 97 years were rich and full and throughout her life she definitely was one "who did not go gently into that good night/but raged, raged against the dying of the light." A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 22 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. All are invited to attend to celebrate Rose's life. In lieu of flowers please consider aiding your favourite charity.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I met Rose a few times very early in my life, Louis was my uncle on my mom's side (Marilyn Marshall maiden Kalata) I heard she was a wonderful person. Sadly she will be missed - Posted by: JASON MARSHALL (UNCLE LOUIS WAS MY UNCLE MOMS SIDE) on: Mar 05, 2023

  • I was sorry to see of Rose's passing. My husband's and Rose's families live across the street from each other in the north end and did many social activities through the years. Rose was special to Bill, when he was a young child he always said he was going to marry Rose when he grew up. She was a special person in his life. I was sorry I was unable to attend the service as I was ill so want to express my since sympathy to her family. - Posted by: Shirley Christie (Wife of Bill Christie) on: Jan 23, 2019

  • Aunty Rose, the last one of the original generation of the Bilan connection for me and I will truly miss her. Aunty Rose always kept in touch with me right up until she could no longer type or hear on the phone and so I would send emails to her via Noel or Heidi. I will always be grateful for her flying out to visit my Mother Rose Billan when she was in her last days in Hospice in Victoria, BC. Aunty Rose would tell me stories of their younger days and how it was her that introduced my parents Andy and Rose to begin with. I so enjoyed my last stay with her in Winnipeg and we would talk for hours about family and life and of course enjoy the perogies that she had hidden away in her freezer just for me. They were "The Best!" and she gave me her recipe and told me her shortcuts for making up a small batch. She will always be an inspiration to me on how to live life to the fullest even when you have outlived all your original friends "You just make new friends" she said. I know how much she loved her family and how grateful she was for all they did for her when she could no longer do for herself. Rest in peace Aunty Rose and thank you for all you did for me. Love Judy and family. - Posted by: Judy (Billan) Williams (Niece) on: Jan 22, 2019

  • Appointment of Godparents is a common practice in the Ukrainian community. Some take it more seriously than others. Rose was my Godmother and she took it very seriously. Her family and my mother’s ( Parnick ) were close. Rose was bridesmaid at my parents’ wedding in 1939. I was born in 1941, and baptized at St. Michaels Church on Disraeli. Thanks to Rose I’ve been able to maintain roots in Winnipeg even though I grew up in Kamsack, Saskatchewan and spent only a year of high school and three years of university in Winnipeg. Her primary role in this regard, encouraged me to maintain connections with the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba, and to be active in the Frontier Centre for Public for Public Policy, a think tank based in Winnipeg. I took her advice when she cautioned me to stay out of politics, per se. Thanks to her family I know my roots there will remain well-watered. Sorry I couldn’t attend this event.
