GEORGE ROBERT SMITH June 13, 1936 - January 22, 2019 With heavy hearts the family announces the passing of George R. Smith on January 22, 2019 at the Seven Oaks General Hospital. George will be missed by his loving wife Ruth, of 56 years and his sons, Craig and Kyle (Lorraine), niece Wanda (Warren) and nephew Doug (Brigitte). He was predeceased by his parents, Les (1972) and Sadie (1990), sister Lorraine (1999) and her husband Ed Brown (2003) and his daughter-in-law Irene (Kyle) in 2007. George was born in Waskada, Manitoba and in 1952 moved to Plumas with his family. He later moved to Winnipeg and in 1958 joined the Canadian Wheat Board and retired in 1993 after 35 years of service. It was there he met Ruth and were married in May, 1962. With their trailer, George and his family travelled to many campgrounds during the summer before they settled permanently in the Gimli Trailer Park. There they enjoyed nature, the beach, feeding the birds, berry picking and playing cards. George loved visiting with friends and family and they all enjoyed a drink of George's famous bottomless glass of wine. The family thanks the staff of Seven Oaks Hospital for their care and compassion shown to George. A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 28 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Rev. Mary Best officiating.

  • We are so sorry to hear of George's passing. We remember well his kindness, generous heart, joy, and jokes. Always offering a huge smile and hearty handshake (although I always went in for hugs). But mostly his friendship toward Don & Bernice. With much love and big hugs, Jim & Karla Druce - Posted by: Jim & Karla Druce (Friends) on: Jan 28, 2019

  • I remember George's sense of humor. He was quick to laugh and had a big hearty laugh. Whenever you visited there was always an offer of a glass of wine. His wine recipe was perfected over many years and enjoyed by all. He always made you feel welcome and will be missed. The memories will live on. My condolences to Ruth and family. - Posted by: Daphne (Friend) on: Jan 27, 2019

  • “That man is a success – who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children, who has filled his niche and accomplished his task. who leaves the world better than he found it, who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it, who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.” – Unknown -sharing in your sadness as you remember your dad. - Posted by: Robert Garvey (Co-worker & friend) on: Jan 24, 2019
