VERNA JOHANNA LANIUK
She will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Wayne (Katriina) and Brian (Laurel), and grandchildren, Kristina, Corey and Justin, and great-granddaughter Nicola.
She was predeceased by her loving husband John; her parents, William and Katie Kerluke; and her siblings, Mitch, Nick, Evelyn, and Doris.
Verna was born and raised on a farm just outside of Sheho, Saskatchewan. In 1948, she married her soulmate John and they moved to Winnipeg. Verna was a hard-worker. She and John owned a number of businesses including Ben's Groceries and the New Dutch Mill Restaurant in Winnipeg and the Interlake Motel and Restaurant in Ashern, Manitoba. She helped John manage Sussex House and also worked at Eaton's.
Family meant everything to Mom and she doted on her children and grandchildren. Many happy times were spent gathered around the kitchen table enjoying mom's cooking. She was a dedicated member of the All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church and spent many hours working in the kitchen. She was a 25-year member of the Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada and enjoyed singing in the church choir.
She was a kind and compassionate soul who loved all people. She made many friends wherever she went and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to thank the staff at Concordia Hospital and the Kildonan Personal Care Home for their kindness, compassion and excellent care.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 10 at 10:00 a.m. at the All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1500 Day Street.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Verna's memory to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of one's choice.
