Sometimes it's hard to say goodbye to someone. Really did not want to say goodbye this soon, however cancer took over, and as hard as I tried, I had to say goodbye. Mom and Dad brought me into this world 67 years ago, and when they passed away a few years back, I thought it would be years until I saw them again. I guess I was wrong. Dad was there to meet me on Monday morning, and when I saw Mom again she had perogies, cabbage rolls and kielbasa waiting for me. Brandy was also there, running around in the yard like she always did.
Like everyone, my life had many good memories. Growing up on Tudor Crescent and hanging out with my lifelong friend Leslie, going to Hampstead, Morse Place and Miles Macdonell were all part of my early years. My goal of being a nurse was achieved. In 1979 a move to Ottawa meant a change in my career. After spending a few years working on Parliament Hill, I became a professional fundraiser for Riverside Hospital Foundation. This was a career move which I truly loved as it let me raise much needed funds for those in need. Having family come to visit in Ottawa and taking frequent trips to Puerto Vallarta provided wonderful memories.
I was blessed in life with a wonderful Aunty Phyllis. You have always been like a mother to me. My many wonderful cousins and close friends were always there for me. Janice, your daily visits to my bedside brightened many of my days. To my dear neighbours, Rose and Gwyn, Lynn, Jeff and Kristina, thank you for always being such wonderful and caring friends. Buddy, even though it was only two years that you were my companion, your playfulness and companionship were a big part of my life. I will miss you all so much.
To my brother Grant, and his wife Kim, thank you for being by my side during this journey. You blessed me with two beautiful nieces in Jacqueline and Kristen, also with their wonderful husbands, Tyler #1 and Tyler #2. To my great-niece Bowie, I will always be smiling when I think of you.
To the wonderful staff, students and volunteers at CancerCare Manitoba and Riverview Hospital, I thank you for your kindness and care during my treatments at CancerCare and my stay at Riverview. Special hugs to Kendel Kennels for opening their home and hearts to Buddy while I was in hospital.
Memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, with a reception to follow.
My love goes out to all of you who have laughed with me, cried with me and were a part of my journey. Even though I am gone, it's not like it's goodbye, it's see you later.

I was shocked and saddened to discover Val's passing in 2019. She and I were friends from the late 1960's onward when we met through her late husband, Bob, when he and I attended the University of Winnipeg. That friendship continued through the succeeding years even though I eventually moved from Manitoba to Ontario with my family to pursue my career. When Val moved to Ottawa and then back to Winnipeg we did have an opportunity to meet occasionally when I was in either city on business or to visit family. Our last visit was in Winnipeg in 2018 when she joined members of my family and myself for lunch in St. Vital. Although I tried to maintain contact with Val afterwards via email and mail, I didn't hear back from her. I knew she was having serious problems with her eyesight so I wasn't overly concerned. And now I know why. I valued her friendship and remember fondly how I was always welcomed into her parents home for home-cooked meals and visit. I will remember the fun times we had and will cherish her memory. My wife, Donna, and I send our sincerest condolences to Val's brother, Grant and his family. I am so sorry to learn of Val’s death. We both worked for an MP on Parliament Hill in the early 1980’s and became friends. We had a lot of laughs in Confederation Building! When she returned to Winnipeg, and I to Halifax, sadly we lost touch. By chance, business took me to Winnipeg several years ago and we reconnected. My condolences to her brother, Grant and family.
