VICTOR DERKSEN
February 28, 1930 - April 26, 2019

Victor Derksen passed away peacefully at Concordia Hospital on April 26, 2019.
Left to cherish many wonderful memories are daughter Linda (Al), son Waldy (Wanda), daughter Shelley (Neil), son-in-law Gerry, brother John (Norma) and sister Mary Pries (Erwin), and their respective families.
Victor was predeceased by his loving wife Elvira (2016), daughter Evy (2013), grandson Jacob (1997), son-in-law Ernie Janzen (1988), brother Peter (1942), and sister Kaethe Sawatsky (2015).
Victor was born in Schoeneberg, Colony Chortitza, Ukraine to Peter and Maria Derksen. In 1937, his father was imprisoned by the repressive Stalin government, never to return. In 1943 the German population of the area was loaded onto boxcars and evacuated to the west, first to Poland and then to a refugee camp in Germany. Victor spent five years in Germany before immigrating to Canada, arriving in Winnipeg on December 24, 1948. He found employment within two weeks of settling in Winnipeg, where he became a skilled self-taught carpenter, home builder and home designer.
Victor lived out his Christian faith with great kindness, humility and fairness toward others, always ready to lend a helping hand. He and Elvira volunteered extensively with various organizations such as Mennonite Disaster Service, Habitat for Humanity, Lithuanian Christian College and McIvor Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church. They travelled together to many places, including a visit to his home village in Ukraine during 2003.
Victor exhibited an encouraging spirit, a readiness to forgive others and a consistently positive attitude. He was forever thankful to live in the great country of Canada.
A viewing will be held at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street on Friday, May 3, 2019 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The funeral will take place at McIvor Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church, 200 McIvor Avenue on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 10:00 a.m., with viewing from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Lunch will be served after the service in the auditorium.
The family would like to thank staff at Donwood Manor Assisted Living and Concordia Hospital, as well as Dr. Carey Isaac, for their kindness and compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Victor's memory to Mennonite Disaster Services and/or Donwood Manor Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My husband and I first met Victor in 1959. We purchased a lot from him and he built our first home. We were a young couple just starting out and he helped us in making many decisions about the building. Thirty years later, in 1989, he built us our second new home in East St. Paul. We had numerous visits to his house to discuss business and were fortunate to meet his lovely wife Elvira and chat over a cup of coffee. He was an honest and hard working man...always polite, always a gentleman. He was never too busy to answer our questions and offer his valued advise. It has been a pleasure to meet him over the years and catch up on what he had been doing. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. I offer my most heartfelt condolences to the family in the loss of a fine man. Sincerely, Shirley Augustine - Posted by: Shirley Augustine (Victor built two houses for my husband and I) on: Apr 30, 2019
