JOSEPH (JOE) BENDER
July 31, 1943 - May 2, 2019

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our dad, Joseph Peter Bender, on May 2, 2019 at the Health Sciences Centre.
Left to cherish his memories are his three children, Bob (Rhonda), Sherry (Brad Sweeney) and Ron (Shannon) along with their mother Darlene Bender.
He will also be remembered by his grandchildren, Brooke and Robin Sweeney, Jade and Shania, by his cousins and their families, Annette Chop, Rose Maxwell, Ken Prout, Lawrence Prout and Kim Byard, and by extended family and friends.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Mary, his brother Bill, sister Joan and son Chris.
From 1965 until his retirement in 1998, Joe worked for the Canadian National Railway (CNR) starting in the yards loading box cars to retiring as a freight accountant. Not surprisingly he loved trains and was very proud of his 33 years of service.
Joe was a devoted member of A.A. for much of his life and cared and respected others in society regardless of their status or income. He was active in his local community sitting on the Willow Park Housing Co-op Board of Directors.
Joe was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church. He was a big sports fan and loved watching and talking about the Jets and Blue Bombers. He loved animals and always had a pet dog.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 13, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street.

  • My condolences to the family on the passing of Joe. I first met Joe when we were in the same grade 11 classroom at St. Johns. I found that he had a sense of humour and choice comments. We got involved with basketball at the Stella Mission and our team played against other church teams. Mostly, we played once a week in the evening at Inkster school among ourselves and other who wanted to play pick up basketball. Joe and Dennis Stewner played guards and were great ball handlers in bringing the ball up the court and passing. He was a good pool player and introduced to me card games at peanut park during lunch hours when we were at school. A couple of other times we went to local night card games Selkirk area-we didn't play, stakes too high. At these games it was like the who, who of St. Johns passing in and out during the evening. As I worked part time at Safeway, I would get a super deal on five pound boxes of mushrooms that they would clear out that night I worked. I would call Joe and go over to his place. His mother would cook them up and we would have a feast. I still have memories of the good times we had together. Sorry to see you go. - Posted by: colin dederick (class mate and fellow team member) on: May 11, 2019
