MARGARET HELEN WAKEMAN
She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Maurice. She is always remembered by her sons, Stewart (Sandra), Murray (Debbie), her daughter Leslie (Paul) and her niece Lisa (Gary). She was exceedingly proud of her grandchildren, Kristin, Adam, Andrew, Caitlin, Brendan and Stephen.
Born August 14, 1932 and raised in East Kildonan, Mom was an intelligent and creative spirit. A pioneering hockey player in her youth, she managed to keep up with the boys on the local team. A self-taught artist, she created beautiful sweaters, clothing and toys for her children and grandchildren. She continued to learn in her later years acquiring the nickname Cybergranny as she grew an interest in computers. Classically trained in piano at an early age, Mom loved music, especially swing and big band.
Mom's greatest pride were her grandchildren. Rainy day packages for the lake, picnic tables, Disney dinners, books and reading: love and learning were a part of everything she planned for her grandchildren. And you could always see Mom and Dad cheering loudly at a Special Olympics snowshoe or track and field event.
We would like to acknowledge the excellent care Mom received at the River East Personal Care Home. It is clear that her home was filled with people who became her extended family. We deeply appreciate the compassion and support that allowed Mom to live well and with dignity.
A private family celebration has been planned.
In lieu of flowers, please consider sending a donation to Special Olympics Manitoba on the Canada Helps website:
