VIRGINIA SCHEER
January 9, 1939 - June 20, 2019

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our Mom, Grandma, and great-grandma on June 20, 2019, at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Ginnie leaves to mourn and cherish her memory her children: Tom (Kathi) Theresa, Sherri, Terri (Paul), and Anita (Stewart); her grandchildren: Jennifer, Jaimie, Cayla (Matt), Chelsea, Spencer, Derek, Lindsay, and Cassidy; and great-grandchildren: Everett and Clara.
She also leaves to mourn her brother and sister-in-law Leroy and Jane Erickson of Yuma, Arizona; brother-in-law Larry Adams of Bakersfield, California, and numerous nieces and nephews in the United States, and many friends she has made throughout her lifetime.
She was predeceased by her husband, Forrest Scheer; her sisters, Bernelda Beddes and Maxine Moore; brothers-in-law, Lynn Beddes and Fritz Moore, and sister-in-law Ruth Adams.
Mom was born in Naper, Nebraska, on January 9, 1939 and graduated from high school in Sterling, Colorado. She married Forrest on June 28, 1958 and settled in Delta, Colorado for a short time. In June 1966, she moved with her husband and oldest three children to Zhoda, Manitoba where they began farming. Soon after Terri was born, followed a few years later by Anita.
As money was tight, Dad had to work away from home. Mom looked after the house and the children. As the farm grew, Mom had added responsibilities of working the farm with their son and eventually the rest of the children as they got older.
In addition, Mom worked part time as a school bus driver. She was also active in the local 4-H club as a 4-H leader. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing and quilting.
When Mom and Dad retired, they moved to Steinbach, where they became actively involved in the 55 Plus. Mom also served as a volunteer, providing rides to medical appointments for elderly people.
Unfortunately Mom suffered a stroke in 2005, which stripped her of her independence and eventually led her to reside at Vista Park Lodge, where she lived for 12 and one-half years. While there, she enjoyed playing bingo and other activities, but most of all, she enjoyed playing cards. She looked forward to Tuesday and Saturday morning card games. We are very thankful for the volunteers who came to play cards with her regularly.
We would like to thank the staff at Vista Park Lodge for her care. After 12 and one-half years, she became very close to some of the staff there, particularly her longtime aid, Donna.
The family would also like to thank Dr. Joshua and the staff from the fifth floor at the Grace Hospital for their amazing care and compassion they provided her over the last two weeks. We are so grateful.
The Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 162 PTH 52 W., Steinbach, Manitoba.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Virginia's memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

  • Terri and family, please accept my sincerest condolences. I was very sad to hear that Terri’s mother had passed away. Terri spoke often about her Mother. She always shared stories about the family dinners and outings for different occasions with her Mom. She spoke so much about her that I felt like I knew her like my own Mom. I know your Mother will be missed by so many as she was the staple of the family. You will be in my thoughts, my heart and in my prayers. Love and Hugs from Susan. - Posted by: Susan Moniuk (Co-worker) on: Jun 25, 2019

  • My Dad, Ron Bowers, became a resident at Vista Park Lodge in April 2018. Your Mom became a fast friend from ‘just down the hall’ - always joking with Dad and I enjoyed visiting with your Mom whenever I would see Dad. She was a lovely lady and joined us for a game of 31 on occasion and sometimes Dad would share a chocolate treat. Your Mom always had a smile and a bright spark in her beautiful eyes. My Dad, my husband - who she always said, cheated at cards:) - and I, will all miss her and think of her fondly. Sending you our sincere condolences. - Posted by: Deborah Bowers (Friend) on: Jun 23, 2019
